Saldo contabile and saldo disponibile
An Italian statement distinguishes the saldo contabile — the accounting balance, everything posted — from the saldo disponibile, the available balance after uncleared items and holds.
They can differ substantially and a US reader taking the first number they see may read either. We label both, because a consulate assessing funds wants the available one and an accountant wants the accounting one.
The bollo, which is a tax and not a fee
Italian accounts above a threshold pay an annual imposta di bollo — stamp duty — charged in instalments and appearing on the statement as a recurring debit.
A US reader reads it as a bank fee. It is a state tax on the account and we name it, because in a financial disclosure the distinction matters.
The IBAN, and the codice fiscale
An Italian IBAN is 27 characters and embeds the older CIN, ABI and CAB codes identifying the bank and the branch. We reproduce the IBAN and the domestic components where the statement prints them.
The statement carries the holder's codice fiscale, derived from name, date and place of birth and sex, which is the identifier every Italian institution uses and the cross-check across the file.
The decimal comma, and the certificate
Italian numbers write a comma as the decimal separator and a point for thousands: € 1.234,56 is one thousand two hundred thirty-four euro. Carrying the punctuation across is an error of a factor of a thousand.
Banks issue a dichiarazione di sussistenza or a balance certificate on letterhead, which is what a consulate generally requires alongside statements. See our Italian page.
