The CNP identifies the holder
Romanian statements and bank certificates carry the holder's CNP — thirteen digits encoding sex, century and date of birth and the county of registration — which does not change and is the cross-check across the file.
It is more reliable than a name, since Romanian diacritics are routinely stripped in foreign records. We reproduce it exactly.
Lei, and the decimal comma
Romania uses the leu, not the euro, and Romanian numbers write a comma as the decimal separator and a point for thousands: 1.234,56 lei.
Romania also redenominated the leu in 2005, removing four zeros, so documents from before then show figures ten thousand times larger. We reproduce the unit as printed and name the redenomination where the dates make it relevant.
The IBAN, and multi-currency accounts
A Romanian IBAN is 24 characters beginning RO. Many Romanians hold parallel lei, euro and dollar accounts at the same bank, each with its own IBAN.
A statement states its currency in the header rather than beside each figure, so a reader who misses the header reads euro as lei. We name the currency on the first line of every statement we translate.
The adeverință, and the diaspora
Banks issue an adeverință or balance certificate on letterhead, stamped and signed, which is what a consulate generally requires alongside statements.
