Bank, branch and account — three numbers
An Israeli account is identified by a bank code, a branch number and an account number, and all three are needed. Israel later adopted an IBAN beginning IL that encodes them.
A US office given only an account number cannot locate it. We reproduce each component as labelled and the IBAN where the statement carries it.
The statement reads right to left
Hebrew statements are laid out right to left, so the date column is on the right and the balance on the left — the mirror of a US statement. Amounts and dates remain in Western digits.
A US reader scanning left to right reads the columns in the wrong order. We set the translation out in the US order and label every column rather than preserving a layout that will be misread.
Zikui and hiyuv, and the dates
Lines are labelled zikui (credit) and hiyuv (debit), and Israeli dates are written day first, so 03/04 is 3 April rather than 4 March.
Both are easy to misread and both change the meaning of a statement. We expand the labels and state the date format explicitly.
The teudat zehut, and the certificate
Israeli financial documents carry the teudat zehut number — nine digits with a check digit — which identifies the holder and does not change with a name.
Banks issue an ishur yitrot, a confirmation of balances on letterhead with the branch stamp, which is what a consulate generally requires alongside statements. See our Hebrew page.
