Dollars, and bitcoin as legal tender

El Salvador adopted the US dollar in 2001, so statements are in dollars and there is nothing to convert. In 2021 it also made bitcoin legal tender and launched a state wallet, so some transaction histories show bitcoin movements alongside dollar ones.

A US reader encountering a bitcoin line in a Salvadoran financial record is not looking at something irregular. We translate the transaction description as it stands and name the wallet or exchange where the record does.

The DUI, on everything

Salvadoran financial documents carry the DUI number, nine digits, which stays with the person and is the cross-check across the file. It doubles as the tax identifier for individuals in most current documents.

Older documents may show a separate NIT instead. We reproduce each as printed.

Remittances are a very large share of income

Remittances from the United States are an exceptionally large share of the Salvadoran economy, and a household statement frequently shows regular inbound transfers as its principal income.

Those lines are ordinary household income for a great many families, and a reader assessing means should see them labelled rather than as a column of codes. We translate the descriptions.

The constancia, and older colón documents

Banks issue a constancia bancaria on letterhead, stamped and signed, which is what a consulate generally requires alongside statements.

Documents from before 2001 state colones at the fixed conversion, and we reproduce the unit as printed rather than converting. See our Spanish page.

Ordering, and what the certification covers

Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
