The dual currency ended in 2021
Cuba operated two currencies for decades — the peso cubano and the convertible CUC — and unified them on 1 January 2021 under the Tarea Ordenamiento, with a large official devaluation.
So a Cuban statement from 2019 may be in CUC and one from 2022 in pesos, and the figures are not comparable. We reproduce the currency exactly as the statement names it and never convert.
MLC accounts
Cuba introduced accounts denominated in MLC — moneda libremente convertible, freely convertible currency — funded from abroad and used for purchases in dedicated stores.
An MLC balance is a distinct thing from a peso balance and from a foreign currency account elsewhere. A US reader will not recognise the abbreviation, and we explain the instrument rather than translating three letters.
Where banking sits
Cuban retail banking runs through state banks — Banco Popular de Ahorro, Banco Metropolitano, BANDEC — and the statement names the branch and the office. Access for people who have left is frequently difficult.
Where a client can only obtain a partial record we translate that, named for what it is, rather than presenting a fragment as a complete history.
The carné, and legalisation
Cuban financial documents carry the carné de identidad number, eleven digits built from the date of birth plus a serial, which encodes the birth date on its face and does not change.
Cuba is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so documents for the United States go through consular legalisation, and those stamps are translated with the rest. See our Cuban birth certificate page.
