Balances quoted in UF
Chilean financial products — mortgages, some deposits, insurance — are commonly denominated in Unidades de Fomento, an inflation-indexed unit of account whose peso value is published daily.
So a statement may quote a figure in UF alongside a peso balance, and converting the UF to pesos at one date invents a number that changes tomorrow. We keep the UF figure and explain what the unit is.
Cuenta vista, cuenta corriente and the RUT
A cuenta vista is a basic sight account without cheque facilities and a cuenta corriente a current account with them, and the distinction affects what the balance means.
Statements carry the holder's RUT — the same number as the RUN for an individual — with a check digit after a hyphen that may be the letter K. We reproduce it exactly.
The peso, and the absence of cents
Chilean peso amounts are written without decimals in ordinary use, so a statement shows whole pesos and the figures are large. Chilean numbers use a point for thousands.
A reader applying US punctuation reads $1.234.567 as one and a bit. We convert the notation and name the currency.
The certificado de saldo, and the Clave Única
Banks issue a certificado de saldo on letterhead, stamped and signed, which is what a consulate generally requires alongside statements.
