SINPE, and the account that is a phone number
Costa Rica operates SINPE, a central bank payment system, and SINPE Móvil lets people transfer by mobile number. A Costa Rican statement is therefore full of transfers identified by phone numbers rather than accounts.
A US reader sees a column of telephone numbers where they expect counterparties. That is the payment system, and we translate the line descriptions and explain the identifier type.
Colones and dollars in the same bank
Costa Ricans commonly hold parallel colón and US dollar accounts, and a statement states its currency in the header rather than beside each figure.
Colón figures are large — a monthly salary runs to six or seven digits — so a reader who misses the header reads colones as dollars and is off by a factor of several hundred. We name the currency on the first line.
The cédula, and the IBAN
Costa Rican statements carry the holder's cédula, assigned at birth registration and unchanged for life, and accounts are identified by a Costa Rican IBAN beginning CR.
We reproduce each as labelled. Entity accounts carry a cédula jurídica whose 3-101 or 3-102 prefix identifies the company form.
The certificación, and the state banks
Banks issue a certificación bancaria on letterhead, stamped and signed, which is what a consulate generally requires alongside statements.
Costa Rica retains large state-owned commercial banks alongside private ones, and a statement from Banco Nacional or Banco de Costa Rica is a state bank's statement. We name the institution. See our Spanish page.
