The lev is fixed to the euro
Bulgaria operates a currency board and the lev is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate that has not moved since the euro was introduced. So a lev balance converts to euro at one unchanging number.
That is unusual and it makes a Bulgarian statement easier to assess than most. We reproduce the lev figure and name the currency, and state the peg where it helps the reader.
The EGN, with its leading zero
Bulgarian financial documents carry the EGN, ten digits encoding date of birth and sex, which identifies the holder and does not change with a name.
It frequently begins with a zero, which spreadsheets eat. We reproduce it exactly, because a number missing its leading digit fails verification.
IBAN, Cyrillic and the decimal comma
A Bulgarian IBAN is 22 characters beginning BG. Statements are in Cyrillic, and Bulgarian numbers write a comma as the decimal separator.
Names on Bulgarian documents have three parts including a patronymic, and Bulgaria's 2009 transliteration may differ from a family's long-standing US spelling. We reproduce the Cyrillic and note the renderings.
