Twenty-four digits in three blocks
A Hungarian domestic account number is twenty-four digits in three blocks of eight, written with hyphens, and older accounts use only the first sixteen. The IBAN beginning HU encodes it.
A US reader given a sixteen-digit number and an IBAN cannot tell they are the same account. We reproduce both as printed and say so.
Terhelés and jóváírás
Hungarian statements label each line terhelés (debit) or jóváírás (credit), and a reader who misses the label reverses the direction.
The közlemény field carries a free-text reference that Hungarian payers use precisely. We translate every reference line rather than treating it as noise.
Forint, and the scale
Hungary uses the forint, not the euro, and forint figures are large — a monthly salary runs to six or seven digits. Hungarian numbers write a space for thousands and a comma for decimals.
A reader mishandling the grouping is off by orders of magnitude. We convert the notation and name the currency, and reproduce a euro or dollar account's currency as its header states.
The certificate, and surname first
Banks issue an igazolás — a certificate of account and balance on letterhead, stamped and signed — which is what a consulate generally requires.
