Capital controls are visible in older statements

Greece operated capital controls from 2015 until they were fully lifted in 2019, limiting cash withdrawals and transfers abroad, and a Greek statement from that period shows the pattern: capped withdrawals, blocked transfers, unusual balances.

That is regulation rather than the account holder's behaviour, and a reader assessing means from a 2016 Greek statement without knowing it will draw the wrong conclusion. We translate the transaction descriptions rather than leaving codes.

The AFM, on everything

Greek financial documents carry the AFM — the nine-digit tax identification number — which every Greek institution uses and which identifies the account holder.

It is the cross-check across a Greek file and it is more useful than a name, since Greek names romanise several ways. We reproduce it exactly.

IBAN, and the decimal comma

A Greek IBAN is 27 characters beginning GR. Greek numbers write a comma as the decimal separator and a point for thousands: 1.234,56 €.

Carrying the punctuation across is an error of a factor of a thousand. We convert the notation and name the currency. Pre-2002 documents state drachma and we reproduce the unit as printed.

The certificate, and the Cyrillic that is not

Banks issue a βεβαίωση — a certificate of account and balance on letterhead, stamped and signed — which is what a consulate generally requires alongside statements.

Greek is written in the Greek alphabet, which a US reader may mistake for Cyrillic. Names romanise several ways and a spelling difference against a passport is usually not a discrepancy. See our Greek page.
