CU-TFL, from Chulalongkorn

Thai proficiency for foreign speakers is certified principally by the CU-TFL — the Chulalongkorn University Test of Thai as a Foreign Language — which tests the four skills and reports levels on its own scale.

It is a university examination rather than a state one, and the certificate names the university. We name the issuer and reproduce the level with its scale rather than converting it.

Thai for citizenship, and the interview

Thai naturalisation requires the applicant to speak and understand Thai, assessed at interview and by singing the national and royal anthems, rather than by a certificate.

So a Thai language certificate in a naturalisation file is supporting evidence rather than a statutory threshold, and we translate it without asserting what it satisfies.

The script, and why reading is separate

Thai is written in its own abugida with no spaces between words, tone marks and a large character inventory, so reading and writing proficiency lag speaking by a long way for most learners.

A certificate reporting four skills separately therefore shows a profile a single overall level would hide, and we reproduce each skill where the certificate gives them.

Buddhist Era dates, and romanisation

Thai certificates are dated in the Buddhist Era, 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar, and we convert each date and show both.

Thai romanises inconsistently, so a candidate name may appear differently from their passport. See our Thai page.

Ordering, and what the certification covers

Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.

Frequently asked questions

What is CU-TFL?

The Chulalongkorn University Test of Thai as a Foreign Language, reporting levels on its own scale.

Does naturalisation need a certificate?

No. Thai is assessed at interview, including singing the anthems. A certificate is supporting evidence.

Why are the skills reported separately?

The script makes reading and writing lag speaking for most learners, so a single overall level would hide the profile.

My certificate says 2565.

Buddhist Era: 2022. Only the year shifts and we convert each date.
