The disability card, and seven types
Thailand issues a disability identification card under the 2007 Act, recording one of seven types: visual, hearing or communication, physical or mobility, mental or behavioural, intellectual, learning, and autism.
The card is registered with the department for empowerment of persons with disabilities and is what opens entitlements — allowances, healthcare, education and employment quota placement. We name the type as recorded.
The medical certificate behind it
Registration requires a medical certificate from a licensed physician on a prescribed form certifying the type of disability, and that certificate carries the clinical detail the card does not.
Where a US office needs the diagnosis, the medical certificate is the document to send alongside the card.
Buddhist Era dates
Thai documents are dated in the Buddhist Era, 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar, so a card issued in B.E. 2564 was issued in 2021. Only the year shifts.
The card carries an expiry and a renewal requirement, and a reader who does not convert the dates cannot tell whether it is current. We convert each and show both.
The thirteen-digit ID, and romanisation
Thai documents carry the thirteen-digit national identification number, which identifies the person and does not change.
Thai romanises inconsistently and there is no single accepted scheme, so a name may appear several ways across documents. We follow the passport and note variants. See our Thai page.
