The sutibat, and the house registration beside it
A Thai birth certificate is the สูติบัตร (sutibat), issued by the district office where the birth was registered. It usually travels with the house registration (ทะเบียนบ้าน, tabian baan), which records who lives at an address and is frequently what an office actually needs to establish a family relationship.

Buddhist Era years, and only the year
Thai documents are dated in the Buddhist Era, which runs 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar — B.E. 2540 is 1997. What makes Thai dates safe is that the calendar shares the Gregorian months, month lengths and leap rules, so only the year number changes and the day and month carry over unaltered.
That is not true of every non-Gregorian calendar and it is worth knowing: a Thai date converts cleanly, and we show both the original and the converted year so the document stays checkable.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

Do I need the house registration as well?
Often, yes — it is what establishes who lives with whom. They are separate documents, so ask the office which it wants before ordering.
My certificate says 2540. Is that a mistake?
No, that is the Buddhist Era: 1997. We convert it and show both.
Are Thai names translated?
Names are transliterated, not translated, and we follow the passport spelling. Thai names are often long and vary in romanisation, so a genuine difference between documents is noted rather than smoothed away.
