The passbook is the record
Thai banks issue a passbook (สมุดบัญชี) updated at a branch or an ATM, which prints each transaction line into the book, and for most personal accounts it is the record rather than a statement.
Consular applications commonly ask for the passbook pages and an updated final page. A separate statement is something you request, and a bank letter is a third document.
The bank letter, and the seasoning requirement
Thai banks issue a bank guarantee letter or balance certificate on letterhead, stamped and signed, and visa applications frequently require the funds to have been held for a stated period — commonly two to three months.
So the age of the balance matters as much as the amount, and the passbook is what evidences it. We translate the dates as carefully as the figures.
Buddhist Era dates, in the passbook
Thai bank documents are dated in the Buddhist Era, 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar, so a transaction in B.E. 2566 is 2023. Only the year shifts.
A reader who does not convert reads every date as five centuries in the future. We convert each and show both, which matters when a seasoning period is being assessed.
Baht, the thirteen-digit ID and romanisation
Thai amounts are in baht with satang as the decimal, and Thai numbers use US-style punctuation — a comma for thousands and a point for decimals — which is unusual among the countries on this list.
Statements carry the holder's thirteen-digit national identification number. Thai romanises inconsistently, so a name may appear several ways against the passport. See our Thai page.
