Lek, and the old lek
Albania uses the lek, and prices are very commonly quoted in "old lek" — a unit of account equal to ten new lek, surviving from the 1965 revaluation, with no note or coin behind it.
So a figure quoted in conversation or on an informal document may be ten times the banking figure. Bank statements use the current lek, and we say which unit a figure is in rather than reproducing an ambiguous number.
Lek, euro and dollar accounts
Albanians commonly hold parallel lek and euro accounts, and with a large diaspora in Italy, Greece and the United States, dollar and euro remittances are ordinary household income.
A statement states its currency in the header. We name it on the first line of every statement we translate.
The NIPT, the personal number and the IBAN
Albanian financial documents carry the holder's personal identification number from the national civil status register, and entity accounts a NIPT, now formally the NUIS.
Accounts are identified by an Albanian IBAN beginning AL. We reproduce each as labelled.
The vërtetim, and the diacritics
Banks issue a vërtetim bankar — a bank certificate on letterhead, stamped and signed — which is what a consulate generally requires alongside statements.
Albanian uses ë and ç and stripping them changes names. Albanian-language statements also come from Kosovo, which uses the euro and has its own banks, and we name the issuing state. See our Albanian page.
