Banking has been disrupted since 2021
Myanmar's banking system has been under severe stress since 2021, with cash withdrawal limits, restricted international transfers and periods of limited branch operation.
So a Myanmar bank statement may show capped withdrawals and an absence of international activity that reflects the system rather than the account holder. We translate the transaction descriptions rather than leaving a reader to infer.
Kyat, and the two exchange rates
The currency is the kyat, and Myanmar has operated an official reference rate alongside a very different market rate, so a kyat balance converts to dollars at two quite different numbers depending on which is used.
We reproduce the kyat figure and any rate the statement prints and do not convert, because a conversion at the wrong rate is not a small error here.
The NRC, and the account holder
Myanmar financial documents identify the holder by NRC number — a structured string with a region number, a township code in Burmese letters and a citizenship category letter — rather than by a simple national number.
We transcribe the whole string and explain the category letter. Rohingya applicants are frequently unable to hold accounts at all, and their files contain no Myanmar bank documents.
Names without surnames, and the stamp
Burmese names are not divided into given and family names, and U, Daw, Ko, Ma and Maung are titles rather than name components. An account name may therefore be arranged differently from a passport.
