The tarjeta de circulación, and the VMT
El Salvador registers vehicles through the Viceministerio de Transporte, issuing a tarjeta de circulación that names the owner, the plate, the VIN and the vehicle class. There is no separate title.
The card is the ownership document, so a US clerk asking for a title will be handed it. We say so plainly rather than letting the client think something is missing.

A very large share of Salvadoran vehicles are bought at US auctions and shipped through Puerto Cortés or Acajutla, so a file frequently holds a US title, often salvage, behind the Salvadoran card.
That US document is the one a US registry recognises, and its brand matters. We translate the whole chain rather than the Salvadoran card alone.
The transfer, and the notarial act
A transfer is made by a notarised sale document — the notary being a practising lawyer authorised by the Supreme Court — and filed with the VMT, which issues a new card.
The notary's authorisation number is on the act and is checkable. We reproduce it.
The plate letters, and the identifiers
Salvadoran plates carry a class prefix — P for private, A for rental, C for cargo, AB for bus — and the class governs how the vehicle may be used.
