Vehicles are in the property registry
Peru registers vehicles in SUNARP's Registro de Propiedad Vehicular, the same public registry system that holds land, and each vehicle has a partida registral recording owners, liens and annotations.
That is a genuine title system, unlike most of the region. The copia literal of the partida is what shows the history, and the plate alone does not.
The tarjeta de identificación vehicular
The tarjeta de identificación vehicular is the card carried in the vehicle, giving the plate, the VIN and the registered owner.
It is not the registry record. A buyer needs the partida; the card only shows what was true when it was issued. We name which document you hold.
The notarial transfer, and the SOAT
A transfer is made by notarial act or by a form with legalised signatures and then inscribed at SUNARP, and the vehicle must carry a current SOAT and a revisión técnica.
An unregistered transfer leaves the seller liable, which is the same trap as elsewhere in the region and just as common. We translate the act and the inscription.
Reserva de dominio, and the identifiers
Financing appears on the partida as a garantía mobiliaria or reserva de dominio, blocking transfer until released.
Parties are identified by DNI or RUC, and the vehicle by plate in the current three-letter three-digit format. See our Spanish page.
