The matrícula, and the ANT
Ecuador issues a matrícula through the ANT or an accredited municipal transit authority, naming the owner, the plate, the chassis and the service class.
It is the ownership document. The annual revisión vehicular sticker and the SPPAT contribution are separate and are not title.
The plate letter, which is the province
An Ecuadorian plate's first letter is the province of registration and the second indicates the service class, with different colours for commercial and public use.
Changing province or use requires a change of plate. The letters carry meaning and we reproduce them rather than treating the plate as an arbitrary string.
The transfer, and the SRI
A transfer requires a notarised purchase contract, payment of the transfer tax at the SRI, and a certificate that no fines or taxes are outstanding, before the ANT will re-title.
Unpaid fines are the commonest blocker, and the clearance certificate is what a buyer relies on. We translate it with the matrícula.
Prohibition of transfer, and the identifiers
A vehicle can carry a prohibición de enajenar from a court or a lender recorded against it, blocking any transfer.
