The Registro Civil keeps the vehicle register
Chile's Registro de Vehículos Motorizados is kept by the Registro Civil — the same body that registers births and marriages — which surprises people, and it records the owner, the plate and any prohibitions.
The padrón is the ownership document issued from that register. Chile has a real title system and the padrón is the document.
The certificado de anotaciones vigentes
Before buying, a Chilean buyer obtains a certificado de anotaciones vigentes showing the current owner, prendas, embargos and prohibitions, dated on the day.
The padrón shows the owner; the certificate shows whether anything blocks a sale. They answer different questions and we name which you have.
The notarial transfer, and the plate
A Chilean transfer is made by a deed with signatures authorised by a notary, filed with the Registro Civil, and the plate stays with the vehicle for its life rather than with the owner.
The permiso de circulación from the municipality is an annual tax receipt, not a title, and clients send it as one.
The RUT, and the electronic issue
Owners are identified by RUT with a check digit that may be K, and documents are increasingly issued electronically with a verification code.
