JLPT runs N5 to N1, and N1 is the highest
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test grades from N5 (easiest) to N1 (hardest) — the number goes down as proficiency goes up, which is the opposite of every scale a US reader is used to.
JLPT does not use CEFR and the test provider does not publish an official mapping. Rendering N2 as "upper intermediate" substitutes our judgment for the issuer's, so we state the level as issued and give the issuer's own description where the certificate prints one.
Pass or fail, with sectional minimums
JLPT reports a total score, section scores and a pass or fail. Passing requires both an overall threshold and a minimum in each section, so a candidate can score well overall and fail on one section.
The score report shows that structure and the certificate shows only the pass. Where the detail matters, send the score report as well as the certificate, and we translate both.
JFT-Basic, for the specified skilled worker route
The Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese is a separate examination used for the Specified Skilled Worker visa, reporting a scaled score against a pass mark at roughly A2.
It is not a JLPT level and the two are not interchangeable. A file may contain either, and a reader who assumes JLPT will misread the scale.
Kanji, and the school transcripts alongside
Japanese language certificates frequently travel with academic transcripts from a Japanese language school, which record attendance, class level and teacher comments in Japanese.
Those are different documents with different weight, and a language school transcript is not a certificate of proficiency. We name each for what it is. See our Japanese page.

N1. The number goes down as proficiency goes up, the opposite of most scales.
What CEFR level is N2?
JLPT does not use CEFR and publishes no official mapping. We state the level as issued rather than inventing an equivalence.
Why does my certificate not show scores?
The certificate shows the pass; the score report shows the totals and sections. Send both if the detail matters.
Is JFT-Basic the same as JLPT?
