Four recognised bodies, four certificate names

Italy recognises four certification systems, each run by a different institution: CILS from the Università per Stranieri di Siena, CELI from Perugia, PLIDA from the Società Dante Alighieri, and cert.it from Roma Tre.

All four state a CEFR level and all four are recognised by the Italian state. They are not variants of one exam and the certificate names its issuer, which we reproduce rather than describing the document as "an Italian language certificate".

B1 for citizenship, since 2018

Since 2018 an applicant for Italian citizenship by marriage or residence must demonstrate B1 Italian, evidenced by a certificate from one of the recognised bodies or by an Italian qualification.

That requirement is why a great many of these certificates exist, and it is why the level and the issuer both matter — a certificate from an unrecognised school does not satisfy it. We name the issuing institution exactly.

CILS levels have their own names

CILS labels its levels with its own nomenclature alongside the CEFR reference — CILS Uno B1, CILS Due B2, CILS Tre C1, CILS Quattro C2, plus A1 and A2 modules and dedicated versions for specific audiences.

The Italian label and the CEFR level both appear, and we reproduce both. Dropping the CILS label loses the issuer's own identification of the examination.

What it is used for in the United States

Italian language certificates reach US files in credential evaluations, in academic admissions, and in support of Italian citizenship applications processed through consulates in the United States — where the consulate reads the certificate and a US office may need the translation.

They also appear in employment files. We reproduce the level, the session date and the issuing institution. See our Italian page.

Ordering, and what the certification covers

Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.

Frequently asked questions

Which Italian certificate do I have?

CILS, CELI, PLIDA or cert.it — four recognised systems from four institutions. We name the issuer as printed.

What level do I need for citizenship?

B1, evidenced by a certificate from a recognised body. A certificate from an unrecognised school does not satisfy it.

What is CILS Due?

The CILS label for its B2 examination. The Italian label and the CEFR reference both appear and we reproduce both.

Do you translate the session date?

Yes. It and the issuing institution are the two fields a consulate checks first.

Ready to get started?

Upload the document and receive the certified translation, typically within 24 hours.
