Celpe-Bras has no failing grade in the usual sense
The Celpe-Bras is the only certificate of Brazilian Portuguese issued by the Brazilian government, and it works unlike most examinations: there is a single integrated test and the result places the candidate at Intermediário, Intermediário Superior, Avançado or Avançado Superior.
A candidate who does not reach Intermediário simply receives no certificate rather than a lower-level one. So every Celpe-Bras certificate in existence is at least Intermediário, and a US reader treating the lowest level as a weak result has it backwards.
It is integrated, not sectional
The examination does not award separate reading, writing, listening and speaking scores. Tasks combine skills deliberately — listening to a recording and writing a response, reading a text and speaking about it — and the single level reflects overall communicative performance.
So there is no skill profile to report and its absence is not an omission. We state the level and say what the examination measures.
Where it is required
Celpe-Bras is required for admission to Brazilian undergraduate and graduate programmes for foreign students, for professional registration in Brazil in several regulated fields including medicine, and it supports naturalisation applications.
The certificate is issued by INEP on behalf of the Ministry of Education and carries an authentication code. We reproduce the code, which is how the certificate is verified.
Brazilian and European Portuguese, and the CAPLE exams
Celpe-Bras certifies Brazilian Portuguese. Portugal's system, run by CAPLE, issues CIPLE, DEPLE, DIPLE, DAPLE and DUPLE against CEFR levels, and Portugal requires A2 for naturalisation.
They are different examinations certifying different varieties, and a file may contain either. We name the issuing body and the variety. See our Portuguese page.

Frequently asked questions
Is Intermediário a low score?
It is the entry level of the certificate, and candidates below it receive no certificate at all. Every Celpe-Bras certificate is at least Intermediário.
Where are the section scores?
There are none. The examination is integrated by design and awards a single level for overall communicative performance.
Who issues it?
INEP on behalf of the Brazilian Ministry of Education, with an authentication code we reproduce.
Is it the same as a Portuguese certificate?
No. CAPLE certifies European Portuguese with its own exam names and CEFR levels. We name the body and the variety.
