HSK changed, and the numbers no longer mean the same thing
The HSK ran levels 1 to 6 for years, with 6 the highest. The revised standard introduced a three-stage, nine-level system, so a new HSK 6 is not the old HSK 6 and a certificate has to be read against the version it was issued under.
We name the version and the level as printed. A reader comparing an older and a newer certificate without knowing the system changed will draw the wrong conclusion about progress or regression.
Speaking is a separate examination
HSK tests listening, reading and writing. Spoken Chinese is examined separately as HSKK, at beginner, intermediate and advanced, and a candidate may hold an HSK certificate and no HSKK at all.
A US reader assuming a high HSK implies spoken fluency is assuming something the certificate does not say. We note what the certificate covers.
What universities and employers ask for
Chinese universities commonly require HSK 4 or 5 for Chinese-taught admission, and scholarship programmes set their own thresholds. HSK scores are reported as totals and by section with a validity period stated by the receiving institution rather than by the issuer.
The certificate itself carries a date and an examination number that can be verified with the issuing body. We reproduce both exactly.
YCT, and certificates for children
The YCT is the youth version of the test, aimed at school-age learners, and its levels do not correspond to HSK levels of the same number.
A YCT 4 is not an HSK 4, and a certificate that says YCT should never be translated as HSK. We reproduce the examination name exactly. See our Chinese page.

Is HSK 6 the top level?
Under the older system yes; the revised standard runs nine levels. We name the version and the level as printed.
Does HSK test speaking?
No. Spoken Chinese is examined separately as HSKK, and a candidate may hold HSK and no HSKK.
Is YCT 4 the same as HSK 4?
No. The youth test has its own levels and they do not correspond. We reproduce the examination name exactly.
Does the certificate expire?
The issuer states a date; validity windows are set by the receiving institution. We translate the date and examination number.
