Memorandum and Articles are two documents
An Indian company is constituted by a Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association, and they do different jobs: the memorandum states the company's name, registered office, objects and capital — its relationship with the outside world — while the articles govern its internal management.
An office asking for "the articles" frequently needs both, because the objects clause lives in the memorandum and the objects clause is what limits what the company may lawfully do.
The CIN encodes the company
The Corporate Identity Number is a twenty-one character code that is not a serial: it encodes the listing status, the industry code, the state of registration, the year of incorporation, the company class and the registration number. A reader who knows the structure can read a company's origins off the number.
It is reproduced character for character. The registrar of companies that issued it is a state ROC rather than a national office, and it is named as printed.
Private limited, public limited, OPC and LLP
A private limited company restricts share transfer and caps members; a public limited does not. A One Person Company is a distinct statutory form introduced in 2013, and an LLP is governed by an entirely separate Act with a partnership agreement rather than articles.
The suffix — Pvt Ltd, Ltd, OPC Pvt Ltd, LLP — is part of the legal name and carries the form. None is a US entity and we keep the Indian designation.
Certified copies, MCA filings and languages
What evidences an Indian company is frequently a set of filings downloaded from the MCA portal — the certificate of incorporation, the memorandum and articles as filed, and forms recording changes of directors or registered office. Each carries its own SRN and filing date, reproduced exactly.
Documents are in English or occasionally in a regional language, and a partly-English document still needs the rest translated. See our Hindi page.
Ordering, and what the certification covers
Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Every seal, stamp, notarial recital and registry annotation is translated — a corporate document with its endorsements missing is not a complete document. Frequently asked questions
Memorandum or articles?
Both, usually. The objects clause is in the memorandum and it limits what the company may lawfully do.
Is the CIN just a serial number?
No. It encodes listing status, industry, state, year, class and registration number — a reader who knows the structure can read the company's origins from it.
Is an LLP a company?
A separate statutory form under its own Act, governed by a partnership agreement rather than articles.
My documents are already in English.
Often they are, and you may need nothing. Ask the office first.
