The carné de vacunación
Guatemalan childhood immunisation is recorded on a carné de vacunación stamped at the health post or centre that gave each dose, under the MSPAS national programme.
Guatemala gives BCG at birth. Doses are frequently given at a rural health post or by a mobile brigade rather than at a hospital, and the stamp names the post. We reproduce it.
MSPAS and IGSS
Care runs through MSPAS Ministry of Health facilities and the IGSS social security institute for insured workers, plus a private sector and NGO clinics in rural areas.
Each keeps its own record and a Guatemalan history is split. We name the institution and the health area on each document.
The DPI and the CUI
Guatemalan medical documents carry the CUI, the thirteen-digit code on the DPI, which does not change and is the cross-check across the file.
Older documents predate the DPI and reference the cédula de vecindad with completely different numbering. We reproduce each as printed.
Maya languages, and the names
Guatemala has more than twenty Maya languages and a substantial rural population whose first language is not Spanish, so a clinical record may note that a consultation was conducted through an interpreter.
Maya surnames are written with apostrophes and letters foreign to Spanish orthography and have historically been hispanicised by clerks, so one surname may appear several ways. We reproduce each exactly. See our Spanish page.
