The extract and the full copy are different documents

As with birth records, the Junta Central Electoral issues more than one version of a marriage record. The short extract states the essentials; the full-text copy (inextensa) reproduces the registry entry with everything later added to it. Where a divorce or a correction has been annotated, only the full version shows it.

If an office asked for a full copy and received the extract, it comes back. Check which was requested before ordering. See also our Dominican birth certificate page.

The divorce is usually written on the marriage record

This is the part that surprises people filing in the United States. In most of Latin America a divorce does not replace the marriage certificate — it is recorded as a marginal annotation on the marriage entry itself. A certificate issued after the divorce carries the annotation; a certificate printed before it does not, and looks like a subsisting marriage.

So if you are proving that a prior marriage ended, the document you need is usually a freshly issued marriage certificate showing the annotation, not the old one in the drawer. Order a current copy before translating. We translate every annotation present, on both sides of the page.

What USCIS requires

The requirement is the same for every country: under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note on your marriage certificate is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules and are not bound by that one — see government agencies. What our certification states is set out on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new certificate to show my divorce?

Usually yes. The divorce is annotated on the marriage record, so only a certificate issued after the divorce carries it. An older copy will read as a marriage still in force.

Are the marginal annotations translated?

Every one present, including anything on the reverse. They are frequently the part that matters most.

Do you translate both spouses' surnames in full?

Yes, both surnames for each spouse, in the order the document gives them, and consistently across every document in the file.

Ready to get started?

Upload your documents and receive your certified translation, typically within 24 hours.
