Guatemala issues two separate certificates, from two separate bodies
This is where Guatemalan files go wrong most often. There are two documents and they are not interchangeable:
- Antecedentes penales — criminal records, issued by the Organismo Judicial, covering criminal court proceedings.
- Antecedentes policiacos — police records, issued by the Policía Nacional Civil, covering police records.
You usually need both, and they expire
Depending on the procedure, an office may ask for one or for both, and applicants regularly obtain one and discover months later that the other was also required. Ask what was requested before ordering anything, from us or from Guatemala.
Both certificates are valid for six months from issue, so a certificate obtained early in a long process can expire before it is filed. Check the issue date against your deadline. We translate either or both, including the statement made when no record is found — a clean record is a finding and the document saying so is worth having.
What USCIS requires
The requirement is the same for every country: under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note on your police record is part of the document, so every one is translated.

A standard translation is for business or personal use where certification is not needed, such as CVs, client intake forms or marketing material, and is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
