Judgment, publication and the civil status entry
A Dominican divorce produces a court sentencia, and the dissolution is then pronounced and recorded with the civil status officer, which is the step that makes it enforceable against third parties. Some divorces additionally involve publication requirements. The documents an office asks for therefore vary: the judgment, the civil status record of the divorce, or a marriage certificate annotated with it.
As with Dominican birth and marriage records, the Junta Central Electoral issues both a short extract and a full copy, and only the full one shows the annotations. See our Dominican marriage certificate page.
The judgment and the annotation are two different documents
This is the distinction that decides whether a file moves. A divorce produces a court judgment or administrative resolution — the reasoning, the orders, the date it became final — and it produces an annotation on the original marriage record, which is what makes the marriage show as dissolved when anyone looks it up.
Offices ask for one, the other, or both, and they are not substitutes. If you were asked to prove a prior marriage ended, a freshly issued marriage certificate carrying the annotation is often what answers it; if you were asked for the terms of the divorce, only the judgment has them. Ask which before ordering — translating the wrong one costs the same as translating the right one.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is set out on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the judgment or the marriage certificate with the annotation?
Ask the office receiving it. The annotation proves the marriage ended; only the judgment carries the terms. They are not interchangeable and some filings want both.
Is the date it became final translated?
Yes, and it is usually the date that matters. A judgment and the date it became enforceable can be different days, and both are reproduced as the document gives them.
My decree runs to many pages.
We translate all of them. Certified translation is $24.95 per page with no word cap, so send it through the quote form if you want the figure before ordering.
