Separación de cuerpos, and the divorce that is famous
The Dominican Republic provides separación de cuerpos y bienes, which suspends cohabitation and dissolves the property regime while leaving the marriage in existence, and it can later be converted into divorce.
The country is better known for its very fast divorcio al vapor — mutual-consent divorce available to foreigners on a short visit — which is a different procedure entirely and which produces its own decree. We name which the document is.
The Junta Central Electoral records it
The civil registry is run by the Junta Central Electoral, the electoral authority, and a separation or divorce is recorded against the marriage act held by an Oficialía del Estado Civil.
A foreign reader expecting a ministry finds an electoral body. It is the correct issuer and the annotated marriage act is what should be sent.
Libro, folio and acta
Dominican civil registry entries are located by libro, folio and acta number together with the Oficialía holding the book, and all four are needed to verify the record or request a copy.
We transcribe every one of them rather than writing "registered with the civil registry", because a verification request without the folio goes nowhere.
Two surnames, and the accents
Dominicans carry paternal then maternal surnames and a US form indexing the last word indexes the mother's name. We keep both and make the order explicit.
