Separación judicial, and the three-year rule
Costa Rica provides separación judicial, which suspends cohabitation and dissolves the property regime while the marriage continues, and after a period either spouse may convert it into divorce.
Costa Rica also allows divorce by mutual consent after three years of marriage, and separation by mutual consent on a shorter timetable. The instrument states which and we name it.
The electoral tribunal holds the register
The civil registry sits inside the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones, which also issues the cédula, and the dissolution is recorded as a marginal annotation on the marriage entry.
A certification issued afterwards carries the annotation and is what a foreign office should be sent. The TSE certification is available online with a verification reference we transcribe.
The notarial route
Costa Rican notaries are lawyers whose instruments carry public faith, and a great deal that a US couple would do by court order is done here by notarial deed — including the agreement underlying a consensual separation.

The cédula, and two surnames
The cédula number is assigned at birth registration and does not change, which makes it the cross-check across a Costa Rican file.
