Three degrees of power, named by statute
Costa Rican law names poder generalísimo, poder general and poder especial, and a generalísimo is further qualified by an amount — "generalísimo sin límite de suma" being the broadest.
The amount is not decoration: a generalísimo limited to a sum cannot dispose of property worth more. We translate the limit exactly, because a reader who drops it misstates the authority.
Registration at the Registro Nacional
A generalísimo and a general power must be inscribed in the Registro Nacional to have effect against third parties, and the inscription carries a citation number.
An unregistered generalísimo does not do what the deed appears to say. We reproduce the citation, which is the reference a notary or a bank checks.
The notary, and the protocol
A Costa Rican notary is a lawyer with a notarial licence supervised by the Dirección Nacional de Notariado, and each instrument sits in a numbered protocol with a testimonio issued.
Consulates exercise notarial functions, so a consular power is a Costa Rican notarial act. We name the issuing office.
The cédula, and the two surnames
Costa Ricans are identified by cédula, nine digits written as province-book-entry, and foreigners by DIMEX.
