The escribano, and the protocol
Uruguay has a strong notarial tradition and the escribano público is a distinct profession, not a lawyer with an extra licence. A power for significant acts is an escritura in the escribano's protocol.
The instrument carries the escribano's registration and the folio, and a primera copia circulates. We reproduce the references as printed.
The certificate of validity
Before acting, an Uruguayan counterparty commonly requires a certificate from the escribano confirming the power is current and has not been revoked.
A valid deed with no current certificate is refused on the day, and applicants send the deed alone. We translate both where the file holds them.
Consular powers, and the apostille
Uruguayan consulates exercise notarial functions, and Uruguay is a party to the Apostille Convention, so a power moving either way carries an apostille rather than a legalisation chain.
A power signed before a US notary and apostilled must be protocolised in Uruguay for registrable acts. We name the issuing office.
The cédula, and the registry
Parties are identified by cédula de identidad, seven digits with a check digit after a hyphen, and a company by its RUT.
