The certificación bancaria is the document consulates want
Colombian banks issue a certificación bancaria — a letter on bank letterhead certifying the account holder, the account type and number, the opening date and frequently the average balance — and it is the standard document for a visa application.
It is a different document from an extracto, the monthly statement, and consulates commonly ask for both. We name which one you have sent us.
Cuenta de ahorros and the four-per-thousand
A cuenta de ahorros is a savings account and a cuenta corriente a current one. Colombian statements also show the GMF — the four-per-thousand financial transactions tax — deducted on withdrawals, which appears as a recurring small debit.
A US reader sees an unexplained charge on every withdrawal. It is a tax and we name it rather than leaving a line labelled with an abbreviation.
The cédula, and digit grouping
The statement carries the holder's cédula number, which is what matches it to every other Colombian document. Colombian numbers use a point for thousands and a comma for decimals, so $1.234.567,89 is one million two hundred thirty-four thousand.
We convert the notation and name the currency, because Colombian peso figures are large and the punctuation is exactly inverted from US convention.
Dollar accounts, and the exchange declaration
Colombians holding foreign currency accounts operate under exchange regulation, and transfers may be accompanied by a declaración de cambio identifying the purpose of the movement.
Those declarations appear in financial files and are a regulatory document rather than a bank statement. We name each. See our Spanish page.
Ordering, and what the certification covers
Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
