The registration book, and the Road Transport Administration
Myanmar issues a vehicle registration book through the Road Transport Administration Department, naming the owner, the chassis and engine numbers, the wheel tax class and the registration number.
It is the ownership document. Transfers are written into it and the book's history is what a buyer reads. We translate the entries in order.
The import permit era, and the slip system
Between 2011 and 2017 Myanmar liberalised car imports through an import permit and vehicle substitution system, where an old vehicle was surrendered for a permit to import a newer one.
A great many vehicles on the road trace to that programme and their files hold the permit and the surrender documents. Those are part of the chain and we translate them.
Right-hand drive, in a right-hand traffic country
Myanmar drives on the right but most imported vehicles are right-hand drive from Japan, and later rules restricted new right-hand drive imports.
