CBU, CVU and alias

An Argentine account is identified by a CBU — twenty-two digits — and virtual wallets by a CVU in the same format. Both can also be addressed by an alias, a short word string the holder chooses.

A statement may show all three plus the account number, and a US reader cannot tell which is which. We reproduce each as labelled and say what it is.

Peso and dollar accounts, and the rate problem

Argentines commonly hold both a peso account and a dollar account, and a statement may show both. Argentina has operated multiple exchange rates simultaneously, so a peso balance converted at the wrong rate is a meaningless figure.

We reproduce the currency and any rate the statement prints and do not convert. This matters more in Argentina than almost anywhere else on this list.

Caja de ahorro and cuenta corriente

A caja de ahorro is a savings account and a cuenta corriente a current account with overdraft and cheque facilities, and the distinction affects what the balance means.

The statement also carries the holder's CUIT or CUIL, built from the DNI with a prefix and check digit, which is the identifier that matches the account to the person.

Inflation, and reading a statement over time

Argentine statements covering several months show balances in nominal pesos during periods of very high inflation, so a rising balance may represent falling real value and a static one a substantial loss.

We translate the figures exactly and do not annotate them. What the numbers mean is for whoever is assessing them, but the currency, the period and the dates must be unambiguous, and we make them so. See our Spanish page.

Ordering, and what the certification covers

Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.

Savings or current account with overdraft and cheques. The distinction affects what the balance means.
