Yale University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Yale undergraduate admissions requires every application document not in English, including transcripts and letters of recommendation, to come with a certified translation, and it does not accept documents you translated yourself. Yale University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Graduate rules vary by school: the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences asks for the original plus an English translation, while the School of Management and the School of the Environment ask for a notarized translation, which can be added at checkout.

Yale University: requirements for documents in another language
What Yale asks for
Translation, Yale CollegeAll application materials must be in English; documents in another language, including transcripts and recommendation letters, need a certified translation (source).
Who may translateNot stated, except that it cannot be you: Yale does not accept documents applicants translated themselves (source).
TransfersTransfer applicants send transcripts, a college report and academic evaluations through the Transfer Common Application (source); Yale's international page states its translation rule for all application materials.
Graduate School of Arts and SciencesRecords must be in English or come with a translation to English; upload both the original and the translation. Mailed or emailed transcripts are discarded during review (source).
School of ManagementA notarized English translation if your institution does not provide one, with a copy of the original (source).
School of the EnvironmentOfficial (notarized) English translations of records not published in English; WES or ECE evaluation encouraged but not required (source).
School of ArchitectureA certified translation of transcripts, letters of reference and other materials not in English (source).
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. Yale College asks for a "certified translation" and excludes only translations you make yourself (international applicants), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Policy checked on October 13, 2026.

Yale College: recommendations need a certified translation too

Most universities talk about transcripts. Yale's international page names letters of recommendation as well: if a teacher writes in another language, the letter needs a certified English translation, like your transcript. Yale also says it cannot accept documents you translated yourself, so a family member's or your own version will not do.

Yale does not ask undergraduates for an evaluation agency report, and international leaving exams do not replace the SAT or ACT. The translation is what admissions officers read, so it must cover every page, including grading scales and any notes on the transcript.

Graduate schools: plain, certified or notarized

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences asks only for a translation to English, uploaded together with the original; you can also upload an evaluation from a service such as WES instead of the transcript, as long as it shows courses and grades. Uploaded records are treated as unofficial, and admitted students who accept must have a final official transcript sent by the issuing institution by July 15.

Two professional schools ask for more. The School of Management wants a notarized English translation when your institution does not provide an English version, though recommenders may write in their own language and use a free translation program. The School of the Environment makes official (notarized) translations mandatory and asks for a certified translation of the diploma when the transcript does not show the degree. The School of Architecture asks for a certified translation. Notarization can be added at checkout for $34.90 per order.

Where Yale's pages differ

Yale's offices use four different words: "certified" (Yale College, Architecture), a plain translation to English (GSAS), "notarized" (SOM) and "official (notarized)" (School of the Environment). Yale College requires certified translations of recommendation letters, while SOM lets recommenders use free translation tools. We have not resolved those differences for you; follow the rule of the school you are applying to.

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to Yale

Undergraduate and transfer applicants submit the translation with the original document in the Common Application materials (source, transfer).

Graduate applicants upload the original and the translation to their school's online application; GSAS discards transcripts sent by mail or email during review (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Yale graduate applicants, the final official transcript must come from the issuing institution; we translate it but cannot send it on its behalf.

Frequently asked questions

Can I translate my own transcript for Yale?

No. Yale requires a certified translation and does not accept documents applicants translated themselves (source).

Do my recommendation letters need to be translated?

For Yale College, yes: letters of recommendation in another language need a certified translation (source).

Does Yale SOM require a notarized translation?

Yes, if your institution does not provide an English translation with the transcript; send a copy of the original too (source).

Can I upload a WES evaluation instead of my transcript to the Graduate School?

Yes, if it includes course and grade information; after accepting an offer you still need an official transcript from the institution (source).

Do I upload both the original and the English version for GSAS?

Yes. If the original is not in English, upload both the original and the translation (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
