University of Virginia: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
The University of Virginia (UVA) asks international transfer applicants for English translations of their documents without saying who must make them, and its Graduate School of Arts & Sciences accepts translations from the degree-granting institution, from named evaluators, or from another ATA-certified translation service. University of Virginia accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. The admission pages we read do not ask for a credential evaluation, though the School of Architecture strongly encourages one; we do not provide evaluations.

UVA requirements at a glance
| What UVA asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | Undergraduate transfer: English translated documents are requested (source). Graduate (Arts & Sciences): transcripts not in English must come with an English translation (source). |
| Who may translate | GSAS: the degree-granting institution, or directly ECE, IACEI, Josef Silny, WES or another ATA-certified translation service (source). Undergraduate pages do not say. |
| First-year applicants | No translation rule is published; the counselor submits the school report, school profile and transcripts online (source). There is no separate international application (source). |
| Evaluation | Not asked for on the admission pages we read. The School of Architecture strongly encourages a NACES course-by-course evaluation (source). |
| Transfer credit | Decided by each school of enrollment, which completes an official evaluation after admission (source). |
| Deadlines | Transfer: March 1 for fall; October 1 for spring, College of Arts and Sciences only (source). GSAS official transcripts: July 1 for fall entrants (source). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. UVA's transfer FAQ requests English translated documents without limiting who makes them (transfer FAQ), and the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences accepts translated materials directly from organizations including "another ATA-certified translation service" (GSAS new students). eVerbary is an ATA corporate member (#273062), and a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets these rules. Undergraduate: one sentence on translations
UVA's undergraduate admission office publishes very little on documents in other languages. Its international page says international students follow the same application, and the instructions have your counselor submit the school report, school profile and transcripts online. The only translation sentence is in the transfer FAQ: students from colleges abroad may apply, and English translated documents are requested.
For transfer applicants that covers every college and high school transcript, all of which are required (source). Transfer credit is not settled at admission: each school of enrollment (Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Commerce, Nursing and others) completes its own official evaluation once you are admitted (source). A translation that keeps course titles, hours and grades as printed gives that school what it needs to match courses.
Graduate School of Arts & Sciences: the named list
GSAS is specific. For admission review you upload unofficial transcripts of all postsecondary work, with an English translation of any transcript not in English, and you are asked not to mail official transcripts while applying (source). After an offer, official records go to the Central Graduate Admission Office by July 1 for fall, by mail or, if the school issues encrypted electronic transcripts, to gsasadmission@virginia.edu; without them you are placed on a registration block unless you obtain a waiver (source).
Records in another language, including transcripts, degree certificates and graduation certificates, must come directly from the degree-granting institution in the original language with a translation, or the translation can come directly from Educational Credential Evaluators, International Academic Credential Evaluators, Josef Silny and Associates, World Education Services or another ATA-certified translation service (source). eVerbary is an ATA corporate member. Because the rule says "directly", ask GSAS how it wants a translation from a service delivered when the official documents are due.
Darden and Architecture
The Darden MBA takes unofficial transcripts as scanned PDFs, but applicants educated at a non-English-speaking institution must have their records translated and sent with the official transcript; all translations must be complete and literal versions of the originals. If the official transcript later differs from the uploaded one, Darden withdraws the offer.
The School of Architecture asks for translations that include all courses, grades, degrees and degree dates, plus an explanation of the grading scale and its equivalent on a US 4.0 scale, and strongly encourages a NACES course-by-course evaluation to meet those requirements. The translation reproduces the grading scale; the 4.0 equivalent is evaluation work, which we do not do.
Documents applicants usually translate
- University transcripts and mark sheets, for transfer and graduate applicants
- Degree certificates and graduation certificates, which GSAS lists separately
- High school transcripts, which UVA requires from every transfer applicant
- The grading scale printed on or with the transcript
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UVA
Transfer applicants apply through the Common Application with the UVA supplement and send all previous college and high school transcripts by mail to the Office of Undergraduate Admission; the translation goes with the record it translates (source, FAQ).
GSAS applicants upload the unofficial transcript and its English translation in the online application; after an offer, the official record and translation arrive directly from the institution or from the translation organization (requirements, new students).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UVA that means we translate your records; the 4.0-scale equivalent Architecture asks for and any NACES evaluation come from an evaluation agency.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Does UVA accept a translation from a translation company?
For the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, yes: it accepts translated materials directly from organizations such as ECE or WES or another ATA-certified translation service (source). The undergraduate transfer FAQ asks for English translated documents without restricting who makes them (source).
Do I mail official transcripts when I apply to a GSAS program?
No. Upload unofficial transcripts with English translations; official records are due after an offer, by July 1 for fall (requirements, new students).
Does Darden accept a summary translation?
No. Darden says all translations must be complete and literal versions of the original records, sent with the official transcript (source).
Will my foreign courses transfer to UVA?
Each school of enrollment completes an official transfer credit evaluation after admission; courses from regionally accredited institutions with a C or higher that match UVA coursework often transfer (source).
Do I need a WES evaluation for UVA?
The admission pages we read do not ask for one. The School of Architecture strongly encourages a NACES course-by-course evaluation (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
