University of St. Thomas (Minnesota): Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul requires graduate applicants to have all non-US post-secondary transcripts evaluated course by course by a NACES member, such as IEE, ECE, WES or TEC, and its undergraduate catalog says transfer transcripts may also be sent to an evaluation service. St. Thomas's evaluation agencies, such as WES, ECE and IEE, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. The translation comes first and goes to the agency with your records; the agency then sends St. Thomas the evaluation, which we do not produce.
NACES course-by-course
Required of graduate applicants with non-US degrees.
Originals behind the report
The evaluation must say it used original or authenticated documents.
Undergraduate: unofficial first
First-year applicants may send unofficial transcripts.
St. Thomas requirements at a glance
| What St. Thomas asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | No St. Thomas page publishes a translation rule. The evaluation agency needs the translation before it can evaluate a record not in English. |
| Evaluation, graduate | All non-US post-secondary transcripts, course by course, by a current NACES member; IEE, ECE, WES and TEC are listed (St. Thomas: international graduate admissions). |
| What the report must state | That it was based on original and/or authenticated documents, the US degree equivalence, the grades and the GPA (St. Thomas: international graduate admissions). |
| Who may translate | Set by the agency: WES wants a professional translator, IEE a certified one, TEC an ATA-certified one, and ECE accepts the applicant's own (WES, IEE, TEC, ECE). |
| Undergraduate, first-year | Transcripts from every school, with the grading scale; unofficial at application, official on arrival; no evaluation mentioned (St. Thomas: international undergraduate application information). |
| Undergraduate, transfer | Official transcripts during the application; the university may require them to go to an evaluation service first, for a fee (St. Thomas: international undergraduate application information, catalog). |
| Professional Psychology | All international transcripts reviewed by an accredited evaluation service; applications are not reviewed until it arrives (St. Thomas Graduate School of Professional Psychology: international students). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. St. Thomas asks graduate applicants for an evaluation from a NACES member such as IEE, ECE, WES or TEC (graduate admissions), and WES accepts a certified translation from a professional translation service (WES), as do ECE and IEE (ECE, IEE). TEC wants an outside translator certified by ATA (TEC). Policy checked on October 13, 2026. |

Graduate admission: what the NACES report has to say
St. Thomas's international graduate page is specific about the report. It must be course by course, from a current NACES member, and it must state that it was based on original and/or authenticated documents, give the US degree equivalence, and show grades and GPA. The page names IEE, ECE, WES and TEC; any other current NACES member also qualifies.
The Graduate School of Professional Psychology adds a timing rule: its international page says an accredited evaluation service must review all international transcripts and that applications are not reviewed until the evaluation arrives. Because the agency cannot start until it has the translation, order the translation first, as early as you can.
What each evaluation agency asks for the translation
WES wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator or translation service, uploaded in your WES account; it does not translate and does not accept school-issued English versions in place of a translation (WES). ECE accepts complete, word-for-word translations and lets applicants translate their own documents, or sells an $85 waiver under which ECE translates internally for the report only (ECE).
IEE wants a certified translator and rejects translations by the applicant or a notary public; it sells its own at $60 per page, and a translation adds two business days (IEE). TEC wants an outside translator certified by the American Translators Association, or its own team (TEC); if you choose TEC, eVerbary can assign a translator individually certified by ATA on request through a free quote.
Undergraduate: transcripts first, evaluation only if asked
For international first-year applicants, St. Thomas accepts unofficial transcripts with the application and wants official ones on arrival; transcripts should include the grading scale, and can be emailed to international@stthomas.edu or uploaded in the undergraduate portal (St. Thomas: international undergraduate application information, FAQ). Transfer applicants must send official transcripts during the application so their credits can be evaluated.
The transfer credit policy says the university may require transcripts from international schools to go to an evaluation service, for a fee, before it evaluates them. None of these pages mentions translation. If your records are not in English, ask international admissions whether it wants a translation with them or will route them to an evaluation service.
Documents applicants usually translate
- University transcripts (all years) and degree certificate, for the graduate NACES evaluation
- Secondary school transcripts with the grading scale, for undergraduate applicants
- Transfer transcripts, if St. Thomas sends them to an evaluation service
- Any record the agency lists for your country in its own application
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to St. Thomas
Graduate applicants send the translation to the evaluation agency with their records: WES in the WES account, ECE by mail or email, IEE and TEC with their online applications (WES, ECE, IEE, TEC). The agency sends the report to St. Thomas; the program's online application is where the rest of your file goes (St. Thomas: international graduate admissions).
Undergraduate applicants email transcripts to international@stthomas.edu or upload them in the undergraduate application portal (St. Thomas: international undergraduate FAQ).
If you need a translator certified by ATA
Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English: Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian at $34.95 per page, and Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian at $44.95 per page.
To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for St. Thomas, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office). We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them. For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For St. Thomas that means we translate your records; the NACES course-by-course evaluation is ordered by you from the agency after the translation is ready.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Does St. Thomas require a translation of my transcripts?
St. Thomas does not publish a translation rule. Graduate applicants need a NACES evaluation (St. Thomas: international graduate admissions), and the evaluation agency requires a translation of records not in English.
Which evaluation agency should I use for St. Thomas graduate programs?
Any current NACES member, course by course; the graduate page lists IEE, ECE, WES and TEC (St. Thomas: international graduate admissions).
Will WES accept an eVerbary translation?
WES accepts word-for-word translations by a professional translator or translation service (WES). An eVerbary translation is that kind of translation.
Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for TEC?
Yes, on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English. Ask for a free quote and say it is for a TEC evaluation for St. Thomas; we confirm the translator and price before you pay. TEC's rule is on its own page.
Can I send unofficial transcripts as an undergraduate?
First-year applicants can, during the application; official transcripts are required on arrival. Transfer applicants must send official ones while applying (St. Thomas: international undergraduate application information).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
