University of Nebraska–Lincoln: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) sets its translation rule in the Office of Graduate Studies: records not in English must be uploaded with certified English translations of all pages, word-for-word and in the same layout as the original, and the rule does not limit who makes them. University of Nebraska–Lincoln accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. UNL evaluates foreign degrees itself, so no WES report is needed unless it cannot verify your documents; what we cannot do is send official records, which must come from your school.

University of Nebraska–Lincoln: requirements for documents in another language
What UNL asks for
TranslationGraduate: certified English translations of all pages, word-for-word, in the same layout as the originals, uploaded with the original-language documents (Application requirements: additional details (Graduate Studies), official transcripts).
Who may translateNot limited by the graduate rule (Application requirements: additional details (Graduate Studies), catalog).
UndergraduateThe international requirements list a final secondary transcript signed and stamped by a principal, the secondary certificate or diploma and English scores, uploaded in MyRED; they say nothing about translations (International student admission requirements (Undergraduate Admissions)).
EvaluationNot required. The Office of Graduate Studies evaluates foreign degrees and asks for an outside evaluation, at your expense, only when it cannot verify your documents (Graduate Catalog: admission policies).
Unofficial, then officialUploaded records are enough for review; after admission, official records must come straight from your institution, or in a sealed envelope you hand over in Lincoln, before you can enroll (Application requirements: additional details (Graduate Studies), Official transcripts from outside the US (Graduate Studies)).
ChinaDegree certificates and transcripts must be verified; the catalog names CDGDC and the official transcripts page names CSSD (see below) (catalog, official transcripts).
TimingProgram deadlines vary; international applicants should apply no later than 30 days before the term (International applicants (Graduate Studies)).
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. UNL's Office of Graduate Studies asks for "certified English translations of all pages" and does not say who must make them (application requirements, Graduate Catalog), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. What "word-for-word, same layout" means for your file

UNL's graduate rule is more specific than most. It asks for certified English translations of all pages, not only the transcript page with the grades, and it wants each translation word-for-word and laid out like the original (Application requirements: additional details (Graduate Studies)). The official transcripts page repeats it: Graduate Studies must receive both the original-language documents and a word-for-word translation (Official transcripts from outside the US (Graduate Studies)).

In practice that means the stamps, headers, grading key on the back of a transcript and the text of the degree certificate are translated too, in the same order and position, so an admissions reader can match each English line with the original. That is how we format certified translations by default; we do not summarize, convert grades or leave pages out.

Uploading: one file per school, and what counts as official

The application takes transcripts as uploads only, not by email or fax. For each school or degree you put everything in a single file: marks sheets, English translations and degree certificates; records from two schools must be two files (Application requirements: additional details (Graduate Studies)). If your degree is from a Bologna-system university, the official transcripts page also lists the Diploma Supplement (Official transcripts from outside the US (Graduate Studies)).

Uploads are unofficial but enough for review. After admission, UNL wants official records sent by your institution, or handed to you in a sealed and stamped envelope that you deliver unopened to Graduate Studies in Lincoln. It states plainly that copies made by translators or evaluation agencies are not official records (Application requirements: additional details (Graduate Studies)): the certified translation accompanies the official transcript, it does not replace it.

Where UNL's pages differ

For degrees from China, the Graduate Catalog says degree certificates must be verified by the China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC), while the Office of Graduate Studies' official transcripts page says certificates and transcripts in Chinese and English must be verified by the Center for Student Services and Development (CSSD, formerly CHESICC), which emails the verification to Graduate Studies. We have not resolved that difference; ask Graduate Studies which verification it needs before you order one.

The undergraduate international requirements and transfer requirements say nothing about translating records that are not in English. If your secondary or college records are in another language, ask the Office of Admissions whether it wants a translation uploaded in MyRED; a certified translation in the layout described above is the format Graduate Studies already asks for.

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to UNL

Graduate: in the application, upload one file per school or degree containing the original records and their certified translations; no email or fax (Application requirements: additional details (Graduate Studies)). Official records follow after admission, from the institution or in a sealed envelope.

Undergraduate: first-year and transfer applicants upload documents to MyRED, Nebraska's student portal; uploaded transcripts count as unofficial until official copies arrive before enrollment (international, transfer).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UNL that means we translate your records; the official transcript must come from your school, and Chinese degrees need the verification UNL names.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my transcripts for UNL Graduate Studies?

The rule asks for certified English translations and does not limit who makes them (Application requirements: additional details (Graduate Studies)). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.

Do I have to translate every page?

Yes. Graduate Studies asks for certified translations of all pages, word-for-word and in the same layout as the originals (Application requirements: additional details (Graduate Studies)).

Do I need a WES evaluation for UNL?

Not by default. The Office of Graduate Studies evaluates foreign degrees and asks for an outside evaluation only if it cannot verify your documents (Graduate Catalog: admission policies).

Can my translator send UNL my official transcript?

No. UNL says copies made by translators or evaluation agencies are not official; official records come from your institution (Application requirements: additional details (Graduate Studies)).

I am applying as an undergraduate. Do I need a translation?

UNL's international undergraduate page does not say. It asks for a principal-signed and stamped secondary transcript and the certificate in MyRED (International student admission requirements (Undergraduate Admissions)); ask Admissions if yours are not in English.

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
