Syracuse University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
Syracuse University asks international undergraduates for official academic credentials with English translations, says arranging them is your responsibility through a reputable translation and evaluation service, and will not translate for you. Syracuse University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Graduate admission is stricter: its pages ask for transcripts translated into English and notarized by the Registrar's Office of the school that issued them, so for a graduate transcript the translation has to come from your school, not from us.
Your responsibility
Syracuse will not translate; you arrange a reputable service.
Credentials by mail
International undergraduate checklists ask for mailed credentials.
Graduate: registrar
Graduate transcripts are translated and notarized by the issuing school.
Syracuse requirements at a glance
| What Syracuse asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation (undergraduate) | Official credentials plus English translations, arranged by you through a reputable translation and evaluation service (source). |
| Copies | If only one original exists, Syracuse accepts notarized or certified copies of it (source). |
| Grading key | Include a key to the marking system if the transcript does not show it (source). |
| How to send | Common Application or Coalition Application, with transcripts and credentials submitted by mail (first-year checklist, transfer checklist). |
| Transfer credit | After admission, two official copies go to the recorder of your Syracuse school or college, with course descriptions in English (source). |
| Graduate rule | Transcripts in English or translated into English and notarized by the Registrar's Office of the institution attended, sent directly by it (source, source). |
| Evaluation | Not required for undergraduates. Graduate: a WES or other NACES/AACRAO evaluation may help but is not automatically required (source). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. Syracuse's undergraduate requirements ask you to have credentials translated by "a reputable translation and evaluation service" (international undergraduate requirements), and a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Undergraduates arrange their own translation, and mail it
Syracuse is plain about who does the work: if your credentials need translating, it is your job to have them translated by a reputable translation and evaluation service, and the university will not provide translations (source). It wants the official credentials and the English translations together, a key to the grading scale when the transcript lacks one, and, if only one original document exists, it accepts a notarized or certified copy of that original.
First-year applicants apply through the Common Application or the Coalition Application on Scoir, and the international checklists ask that all transcripts and academic credentials be submitted by mail (first-year checklist). Plan for postage time, and keep the translation with the credential it belongs to so the two can be matched. The requirements page also notes that IGCSE or GCSE results alone are not enough without a further year of study, and that the BTEC is not accepted for admission (source).
Transfer credit is decided by your school or college
International transfer applicants mail their most recent college transcript and their final secondary school transcript or Leaving Certificate, and Syracuse encourages applying by January 5 for fall (transfer checklist). Once admitted, you ask your current institution to send two official copies to the recorder of the Syracuse school or college that admitted you, which issues the credit evaluation. Course descriptions must be sent as well, and Syracuse says course descriptions not translated into English will not be accepted (source). That is often the longest document in a transfer file.
Graduate admission: the registrar translates
The graduate pages work differently. Before transcripts are sent, Syracuse asks that original transcripts be translated into English and notarized by each Registrar's Office, and that they reach the university in a sealed envelope directly from the institution (source). The transcript requirement page repeats the rule and lets the registrar send electronically through Parchment, WES or a secure email; all graduate students must meet it by the end of their first semester or face a registration hold (source, checklist).
A credential evaluation is not automatically required for graduate admission; WES or another NACES or AACRAO member may help, and holders of three-year degrees from Pakistan, Bangladesh or Nepal may be asked for one (source). A professional translation can still help you read your own records or support other documents, but it does not replace the registrar's translation Syracuse asks for.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Final secondary school transcript or Leaving Certificate
- College or university transcripts
- Course descriptions for transfer credit
- Grading scale or marking key
- Diplomas and certificates
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to Syracuse
Undergraduates mail their credentials and the translations to Syracuse after applying through the Common or Coalition Application (first-year checklist, transfer checklist). Admitted transfer students send course descriptions in English with the two official transcript copies to their school or college recorder (source).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Syracuse graduate applicants that means we cannot provide the transcript translation: it must be translated and notarized by your school's Registrar's Office. For undergraduates we cover the translation; Syracuse does not ask for an evaluation.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my documents for Syracuse undergraduate admission?
You arrange it through a reputable translation and evaluation service; Syracuse will not translate for you (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.
Can I upload my international credentials instead of mailing them?
The international first-year and transfer checklists ask for transcripts and academic credentials to be submitted by mail (source).
Do my course descriptions need a translation for transfer credit?
Yes. Syracuse will not accept course descriptions that are not translated into English (source).
Can a professional translator translate my transcript for a Syracuse graduate program?
Syracuse's graduate pages ask for transcripts translated into English and notarized by the Registrar's Office of the issuing institution (source).
Do I need a WES evaluation for graduate admission?
Not automatically; it may help, and three-year degrees from Pakistan, Bangladesh or Nepal may need one (source).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
