University at Buffalo (SUNY): Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
The University at Buffalo (SUNY) asks first-year and transfer applicants only for an English translation of any document not in English, without saying it must be certified or who must make it; a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Its Graduate School leaves translation rules to departments: the School of Management accepts official translations from the issuing institution or a recognized translation service, so for Management programs the University at Buffalo (SUNY) accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary, and Urban and Regional Planning asks for a certified translation. UB converts foreign grades itself, so transfer applicants need no evaluation, and the School of Management does not accept one in place of your transcripts.

UB requirements at a glance
| What UB asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation (first-year) | Any document not written in English must come with an English translation; the page does not ask for certification (source). |
| Translation (transfer) | Official transcripts with an English translation; UB makes the grade conversions (source). |
| Who may translate | Not stated for undergraduates or at Graduate School level. School of Management: the issuing institution or a recognized translation service (source). Urban and Regional Planning: a certified translation, translator not named (source). |
| Evaluation | Undergraduate: none; counselors compare your grades with UB's 4.0 scale, and transfers are told not to get one (source). Graduate: some departments may require a third-party evaluation (source); Management will not accept one in place of your transcripts (source). |
| Country rules (first-year) | A country table sets what goes with the application and what comes before enrollment, for example India's Standard X results first and Standard XII later, or WAEC certificates with a scratch-card PIN for Nigeria. |
| Copies or originals (graduate) | Unofficial copies are enough to apply, and you should not mail official documents unless asked (source). Urban Planning wants originals or registrar-certified true copies on arrival (source). |
| Where to apply | Undergraduates: ApplySUNY, Common App or Coalition for College, then the Applicant Status Page. Graduate: the UB Graduate Application System and its status portal. |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | UB's admissions pages ask for an English translation and do not restrict who makes it (first-year, transfer); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. For School of Management graduate programs, yes: translations may come from the issuing institution or a recognized translation service (School of Management). Policy checked on October 12, 2026. |

Undergraduate: a plain translation, and UB's own grade conversion
UB's undergraduate wording is about as light as it gets: a document not in English must be accompanied by an English translation (international first-year). There is no certified or notarized requirement and no list of translators, and no evaluation, because UB's admissions counselors convert foreign grades to its 4.0 scale themselves. The transfer page says the same in plainer terms: you do not need to obtain an evaluation, just send official transcripts with an English translation (international transfer).
What changes by country is the timing. UB's country table splits documents into those due with the application, typically transcripts for the most recent three years, and those due before enrollment, such as the leaving diploma (for Mexico and Spain, the Bachillerato or Título de Bachiller). China asks for the Senior Middle School Graduation Certificate. Each needs its translation when it is sent. Transfer applicants send an electronic copy of transcripts from every college attended, and Indian applicants include mark sheets for every attempt in every semester.
Graduate: the department sets the rule
The Graduate School's requirements page says nothing about translations; it accepts unofficial transcripts to apply, sends admitted students instructions for official ones, has foreign GPAs reviewed by UB's Office of International Admissions, and warns that some departments may want a third-party evaluation (requirements). It also accepts all three-year degrees from accredited Indian institutions. The engineering departments we checked add no translation wording.
Two programs do set rules. The School of Management wants official English translations from the issuing institution or a recognized translation service, PDF uploads of both sides of each page to the Application Status portal, Indian degree or provisional certificates, and no mailed transcripts; outside credential evaluations are not accepted in lieu of your institution's transcripts (School of Management). Urban and Regional Planning asks for unofficial transcripts plus a copy of the certified translation at application, then originals or certified true copies stamped by your university's records office or Examiner's Office on arrival; copies certified by other offices are refused (Urban Planning). SUNY Buffalo State is a separate college; these rules are not its rules.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary transcripts for the last three years
- School-leaving certificate or diploma, such as the Bachillerato
- National exam results, such as India Standard X and XII or WAEC
- University transcripts and semester mark sheets
- Degree or provisional degree certificate (graduate)
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to UB
Undergraduates apply through ApplySUNY, the Common App or Coalition for College and follow missing items on the Applicant Status Page; translations go with the document they belong to, at the stage the country table sets for it.
Graduate applicants upload unofficial transcripts and translations to the UB Graduate Application System; School of Management applicants upload final records as PDFs to the Application Status portal (source), and Urban Planning applicants bring originals or registrar-certified copies on arrival (source).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. At UB that means we translate; there is usually no evaluation to buy, and the official transcripts, and for Urban Planning the certified true copies, come from your school.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a WES evaluation to transfer to UB from a foreign university?
No. UB tells transfer applicants to send official transcripts with an English translation; its counselors convert the grades (source).
Does my translation for UB undergraduate admission have to be certified?
UB's first-year page only says non-English documents must come with an English translation; it does not mention certification or who may translate (source). A certified translation meets that wording.
Can I use a translation service for a UB School of Management master's?
Yes. Translations may come from the issuing institution or a recognized translation service; an outside evaluation will not replace your transcripts (source).
Do I need official transcripts to apply to UB graduate programs?
No. Unofficial copies are enough to apply, and admitted students receive instructions for official ones; some departments may ask for a third-party evaluation (source).
Which school-leaving documents does UB need from Mexico or Spain, and when?
Transcripts for the last three years with the application, and the Bachillerato or Título de Bachiller before enrollment, each with an English translation (country table).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
