How we know · policy checked on October 21, 2026

Southern Illinois University Carbondale says all transcripts must be translated into English and that transcripts in any other language will not be accepted; its international admissions page does not say who must make the translation.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

SIU reads undergraduate records itself and evaluates transfer credit after admission, so no outside evaluation is asked for, but the original transcripts must bear the issuing school's seal.

SIU at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

SIU's international admissions page requires every transcript to be translated into English and does not restrict who translates it (international admissions), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets it. Policy checked on October 21, 2026.

SIU requirements in detail

Translation

All transcripts must be translated into English; transcripts in any other language are not accepted (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

Who may translate

Not stated; the page names no translator.

Originals

Transcripts and academic documents must be original and bear the official seal of the issuing institution (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

Scanned copies

Accepted for admission purposes for the 2025-2026 academic year; official originals are due before or upon arrival at SIU (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

What freshmen send

High school transcripts, usually 3 to 5 years, plus exit examination results such as a Secondary School Certificate where your country requires them, and any university transcripts (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

Transfer applicants

12 to 25 university credit hours: high school and university transcripts; 26 or more: university transcript only (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

Evaluation

Not required for undergraduates; credit transfer evaluations are done by SIU after admission (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

Graduate applicants

Official transcripts from all institutions; a WES-type evaluation may be used for initial review only (Graduate School: international applicants).

A transcript in another language is not a transcript at SIU

Many universities ask for a translation "if needed".

SIU's Center for International Education puts it more bluntly: all transcripts must be translated into English, and transcripts in any language other than English will not be accepted (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

For SIU the translation is part of the transcript, not an extra sent later.

SIU does not ask undergraduates for an outside evaluation: it applies its own minimums (a 2.75 high school GPA for freshmen, 2.0 for transfers) and, after admission, its own team decides which courses transfer (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

Course titles, marks and the grading scale need to be complete and in the order of the original, and the translation should cover any exit examination certificate you upload with the transcript.

Scans for the decision, sealed originals for enrollment

For admission, SIU accepts scanned copies, uploaded in the online application or emailed to ia@siu.edu if the portal gives trouble.

The originals, bearing the official seal of the school that issued them, must reach SIU before or upon your arrival (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

The page still describes this as the rule for the 2025-2026 academic year; if you apply for a later term, confirm it with International Admissions.

Transfers from a US college follow a different path: their official transcripts go to the Office of the Registrar's Articulation & Evaluation unit, or by email from the institution to transferservices@siu.edu (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

SIU publishes International Course Articulation Guides to show how credit from abroad usually transfers.

Graduate School: transcripts from the registrar

Graduate applicants apply through SIU's Graduate School, not the Center for International Education. Uploaded transcripts count as unofficial and are used to calculate your GPA (Graduate School: how to apply).

Final official transcripts showing the degree conferred must come from the registrar of your school, electronically or in a sealed envelope, before you register for the second term; a diploma or degree certificate showing the degree is also accepted (Graduate School: international applicants).

The Graduate School says third-party evaluations such as WES can be used for initial review but are not final, official transcripts (Graduate School: international applicants).

Its pages do not mention translations, and the Center for International Education handles undergraduate admission only, so ask the Graduate School what it needs for records not in English before you order.

Need a certified translation for SIU?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

  • High school transcripts for 3 to 5 years of secondary education
  • Exit examination certificates, such as a Secondary School Certificate
  • University transcripts, even for fewer than 12 credit hours
  • Diplomas or degree certificates showing the degree awarded (graduate applicants)

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to SIU

  • Undergraduates upload scanned transcripts and their English translations in the online application ($40 fee); if the portal fails, email them to ia@siu.edu. Originals with the school seal follow before or upon arrival (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

  • Graduate applicants upload unofficial transcripts in the Graduate School application; official ones come from the registrar to gradadmissions@siu.edu or in a sealed envelope (Graduate School: how to apply).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For SIU that means we translate the transcripts and certificates; the sealed originals still have to come from your school.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send SIU my transcript in Spanish and translate it later?

No. SIU says transcripts in any language other than English will not be accepted (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)). Send the original with its English translation.

Who can translate my transcripts for SIU?

SIU does not name a translator (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets its rule.

Do I need a WES evaluation for SIU undergraduate admission?

No. SIU evaluates transfer credit itself after you are admitted (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

Will a scanned transcript do?

For the admission decision, yes (the page states this for 2025-2026); the sealed originals must reach SIU before or upon arrival (International admissions (Center for International Education, siu.edu)).

Does a WES report replace my graduate transcripts?

No. The Graduate School uses third-party evaluations for initial review only (Graduate School: international applicants).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
