Pasadena City College: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Pasadena City College requires F-1 applicants to send a certified English translation with every transcript, certificate and diploma not in English, and with a bank statement or letter not in English; the checklist does not say who must translate. Pasadena City College accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Using foreign college credit toward a PCC associate degree is separate: it needs a course-by-course report from one of three evaluation agencies PCC names, which we do not provide.

Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. PCC's international application checklist asks for "a certified English translation" of transcripts, certificates, diplomas and bank letters not in English, without limiting who makes it (application checklist); a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. F-1 applicants and residents follow different paths

For F-1 applicants, translation is part of the application itself. The International Student Center's online application asks you to upload original transcripts of every school at your current level (and proof of high school graduation if you are under 18), and a certified English translation must accompany each transcript, certificate and diploma not in English (application checklist). The financial documents follow the same rule: a bank statement or letter not in English needs a certified English translation too.

Residents and other US applicants enter through open admission: high school graduates, or anyone 18 or older who can benefit from instruction, may attend (catalog). For them, placement in math and English is set from high school courses and grades, while ESL and international students take Directed Self-Placement in the online orientation (placement). If your high school record is in another language and you want it used for placement, ask a counselor how PCC wants it presented; a certified translation keeps the course names and grades readable.

Foreign college credit: only for a PCC degree

PCC grants credit for coursework from another country only toward its own associate degrees. You first complete 12 units at PCC, then order a detailed or comprehensive report from IERF, ACEI or IESCAREE showing each course, semester units, grade and lower or upper division level. A counselor sends the report to PCC's evaluators. Up to 70 units can count; English composition, oral communication and ethnic studies cannot be met with foreign coursework (source).

If you only plan to transfer to a university, PCC says not to do this: four-year schools run their own foreign evaluations. Official evaluation requests currently take 8 to 10 weeks (source). Evaluation agencies set their own translation rules; see translation for credential evaluation.

Where PCC's pages differ

The counseling page says you must complete 12 units at PCC before the foreign-credit evaluation (source); the international FAQ says PCC evaluates after 15 units. The counseling page lists IERF, ACEI and IESCAREE; the older Foreign Credit Evaluation PDF linked from the FAQ, dated 2017, lists IERF, ACEI and AERC. We have not resolved these differences; confirm with a counselor before you pay for an evaluation.

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to PCC

F-1 applicants upload transcripts, translations and the bank letter in the second half of PCC's online international application, after paying the $50 fee; the International Student Center is at iso@pasadena.edu (source).

Students using foreign credit for a PCC degree have the agency send its report to PCC, then ask a counselor to submit the evaluation request (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For PCC that means we translate your records and bank letter; the course-by-course report for foreign credit comes from IERF, ACEI or IESCAREE.

Frequently asked questions

Does Pasadena City College require a certified translation?

Yes, for F-1 applicants: a certified English translation must accompany every transcript, certificate and diploma not in English (source). A certified translation from eVerbary meets that.

Does my bank statement need a translation?

Yes, if it is not in English: PCC asks for a certified English translation of the bank statement or letter (source).

Can I use my foreign college credits at PCC?

Toward a PCC associate degree, yes, after 12 units at PCC and a course-by-course report from IERF, ACEI or IESCAREE; up to 70 units (source).

Should I get an evaluation if I plan to transfer to a university?

PCC says no: four-year universities do their own foreign evaluations (source). Talk to a counselor first (FAQ).

How is my math and English placement decided?

From your high school courses and grades; ESL and international students complete Directed Self-Placement in the online orientation (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
