Northern Arizona University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Northern Arizona University asks that transcripts not issued in English come with a certified English translation, and its Center for International Education does not say who must make it. Northern Arizona University accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. NAU reviews uploaded copies for admission and accepts NACES evaluations without requiring them, except for Nigeria; NAU's graduate admissions policy also mentions an agency evaluation, which we do not provide.

Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. NAU's bachelor’s application steps ask for "a certified English translation" of transcripts not issued in English, without restricting who makes it, and a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. NAU reads your copies; an evaluation is optional

For a bachelor's degree you upload copies of your secondary and post-secondary transcripts, including vocational and ESL records, to the application or email them to studynau@nau.edu, and NAU uses them for the admission evaluation (source). The minimum is a 2.5 GPA on a 4-point scale for first-year students and for transfer students without an associate degree; an associate degree from an accredited US college lowers it to 2.0.

NAU accepts evaluations from NACES members but does not require them, with one exception: post-secondary transcripts from Nigeria must be evaluated by a NACES-approved service (source). An evaluation, NAU warns, does not guarantee transfer credit. The official records then come straight from the school, by email from a verifiable school address or by mail.

Transfer credit is decided from course descriptions

NAU grants transfer credit for work at universities recognized by the home-country Ministry of Education or regionally accredited in the US, up to 90 credits from a four-year school and 64 from a two-year school, with a C or better (source). It is a two-step process: international admissions posts the credit and the liberal studies designations, then you give course descriptions and syllabi to the department, which decides whether a course counts toward your major.

Those course descriptions must be in English. They are usually long, so translate them early; the per-page price applies to them like any other document.

Where NAU's pages differ

For graduate applicants, the Center for International Education asks for unofficial transcripts with an official English translation and requires an Arizona Department of Education-approved evaluation only for Nigeria. NAU's graduate admissions policy says every international degree must come with a professional course-by-course evaluation, translation included, from an Arizona Department of Education-approved agency. We have not resolved this; ask gradinternational@nau.edu before you pay for an evaluation. Evaluation agencies set their own translation rules; see translation for credential evaluation.

Uploading the translation to NAU

Upload copies of your transcripts and their translations with the online application, or email them to studynau@nau.edu (source). After applying, check your status in LOUIE under Admissions, Application Status (source).

Graduate applicants upload unofficial transcripts and translations with the graduate application; after admission, each institution sends official transcripts directly (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For NAU that means we translate your records, course descriptions and financial documents; a NACES or Arizona Department of Education-approved evaluation, where one is needed, comes from the agency.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my transcripts for NAU?

NAU asks for a certified English translation and does not say who must make it (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary qualifies.

Do I need a NACES evaluation to apply to NAU?

No, unless your post-secondary transcripts are from Nigeria. NAU accepts NACES evaluations but does not require them (source).

Do my course descriptions have to be in English for transfer credit?

Yes. NAU asks for official post-secondary transcripts and course descriptions in English (source).

Do graduate applicants need an evaluation?

The international graduate page requires one only for Nigeria (source); the graduate admissions policy asks for an approved agency evaluation for all international degrees (policy). Confirm with gradinternational@nau.edu.

Do my bank statements need a translation?

Yes. NAU's international student services ask for financial documents in English or translated into English (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
