How we know · policy checked on October 26, 2026

Modesto Junior College publishes no translation rule of its own: foreign transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES-affiliated service before they are submitted, in a detailed course-by-course report showing US semester units, grades and course level, paid by the student.

MJC's evaluation agencies, such as WES, ECE and IERF, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary.

You order the translation first and send it to the agency with your records; the evaluation itself is something we do not provide.

MJC at a glance

Does it accept eVerbary? Yes

MJC requires foreign transcripts to be evaluated by a NACES member before they reach the college (MJC transcripts page), and WES accepts a certified translation from a professional translation service (WES rule); ECE and IERF, also NACES members, accept one as well. Worth knowing about MJC

Evaluated first

Foreign transcripts go to a NACES agency before MJC.

Lower division only

C or better becomes a Pass grade.

Not for transfer GE

Nor English Composition or US History/Government.

MJC requirements in detail

Translation

MJC states no translation rule; foreign transcripts reach it through a NACES evaluation (MJC: official transcripts (foreign transcripts)). The translation is what the agency needs before it can evaluate a document not in English.

Who may translate

Set by the evaluation agency. WES, ECE and IERF accept a translation from a professional service.

Evaluation

By a NACES-affiliated service, before submission: a detailed equivalency report with US semester units, the grade for each course, a course-by-course analysis and lower or upper division level (MJC: official transcripts (foreign transcripts)).

Credit limits

Only lower-division courses are considered; grades of C or better become Pass; foreign work does not meet English Composition, US History/Government or transfer GE (MJC: official transcripts (foreign transcripts)).

F-1 admission documents

Official records of study (high school transcript and diploma), sent with the application to MJC_InternationalStudents@yosemite.edu (international students).

F-1 deadlines

Fall: July 1 new, August 10 transfer; spring: November 1 new, December 10 transfer (MJC: international student support).

What each evaluation agency asks for the translation

MJC accepts any NACES-affiliated service, and each agency sets its own translation rule.

WES wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator, such as a certified translation agency or another professional service; it does not accept translations by applicants and does not translate documents itself.

ECE asks for complete, literal, word-for-word translations in the same format as the original and lets applicants translate themselves; for $85 it sells a Translation Waiver, under which ECE translates internally for the report and no translation is delivered to you.

IERF asks for typed, line-by-line, word-for-word translations and does not require them to be certified or notarized.

Course equivalency at MJC

The evaluation is only the first step.

Once it is on file, you ask the MJC division office that teaches each course for an equivalency, and you may need course descriptions, syllabi with lecture and lab hours, and prerequisites from your school abroad (MJC: official transcripts (foreign transcripts)).

If those documents are not in English, the division office will read them more easily with a translation; translate the description of each course you want matched rather than the whole catalog.

Weigh the cost first: MJC considers only lower-division courses, converts grades of C or better to Pass, and does not let foreign coursework meet English Composition, US History/Government or transfer GE requirements (MJC: official transcripts (foreign transcripts)).

F-1 applicants and high school records

For F-1 admission, the International Students page lists official records of study (the high school transcript and diploma), a Statement of Financial Responsibility, English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo, waived for fully English-taught high school), an autobiographical essay and a passport copy, and refers you to page 1 of the application for details on each document (MJC: international student support).

The page itself does not mention translation; if your high school records are not in English, ask the office before you send them. I-20s are issued within 4 weeks of a complete application.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For MJC that means we translate your records and course descriptions; the NACES course-by-course evaluation is ordered by you from the agency after the translation.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does MJC require a certified translation of my foreign transcript?

MJC publishes no translation rule. It requires a NACES evaluation (MJC: official transcripts (foreign transcripts)), and the agency asks for the translation: WES, for example, wants one from a professional translator (WES).

What kind of evaluation does MJC want?

A detailed equivalency report with US semester units, each course grade, a course-by-course analysis and lower or upper division level (MJC: official transcripts (foreign transcripts)).

Can my foreign courses count toward transfer GE?

No. Foreign coursework does not meet English Composition, US History/Government or transfer GE requirements (MJC: official transcripts (foreign transcripts)).

Will my grades transfer as letter grades?

No. Grades of C or better are converted to Pass (MJC: official transcripts (foreign transcripts)).

When is the F-1 deadline?

July 1 for new students and August 10 for transfers for fall; November 1 and December 10 for spring (MJC: international student support).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
