Green River College: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

Green River College's Registrar asks for foreign transcripts in English or translated by a licensed translation service, and its International High School Completion program asks for high school transcripts translated into English; the F-1 application itself asks for non-U.S. transcripts "if available" and says nothing about translation. Green River College accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. For credit from a foreign college, the transfer-credits page also asks for a NACES course-by-course evaluation in most cases, which we do not provide.

High School Completion: the translation decides how many classes you take

Green River's International High School Completion program lets students who are 16 by arrival finish a Washington State high school diploma at the college. It requires your high school transcripts translated into English, and Green River's own High School Completion evaluators read them to tell you how many classes are left; the program says most students need six (program information). There is no outside evaluation for this step, so the translation is the document the evaluators work from: every subject, year and mark should be on it.

Applicants send transcripts from every high school attended, including 9th grade, and can bring the official ones when they arrive (admissions). Students who already hold a high school diploma from their home country or the US are not eligible for the program (source).

College credit: the Registrar's form and the NACES route

The Registrar's Transcript Evaluation Request, offered as a printable PDF next to the online version on the forms page, says all foreign transcripts must be in English and, if translated, translated by a licensed translation service. It also accepts only official records: sealed in the original envelope or sent electronically by the school or a service.

The transfer-credits page describes the route for college credit earned abroad: apply, order a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES agency, have the agency send it to the Office of the Registrar, then file the request form. It adds an exception: if your international transcript is already in English, lists the credits for each course and states the grading scale, a NACES evaluation may not be needed, and you should write to records@greenriver.edu. The placement office lists recommended agencies, including ACEI, ECE, FIS, Josef Silny and WES, and notes that evaluated international transcripts cannot be used for placement (source).

Evaluation agencies set their own translation rules; see translation for credential evaluation.

Where Green River's pages differ

The Registrar's request form asks for foreign transcripts in English or translated by a licensed translation service (form), while the transfer-credits page asks for a NACES course-by-course evaluation of international transcripts and the placement page says college transcripts from outside the US must be evaluated by an external service. Processing time also differs: about four weeks on the form, 4 to 6 weeks on the transfer-credits page. We have not resolved this; ask records@greenriver.edu which applies to your transcript.

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to Green River

F-1 applicants activate the GRC Applicant Portal from the email sent after applying and upload documents there, or through the document upload portal if the Applicant Portal fails (source).

For credit, official records go to the Office of the Registrar, 12401 SE 320th St, Auburn, WA, by mail, electronically from the school, or sealed in person, with the Transcript Evaluation Request; uploads through the Secure Document Dropbox are treated as unofficial (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Green River that means we translate your high school and college records; a NACES course-by-course evaluation, where the Registrar requires one, comes from an evaluation agency.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to translate my transcripts to apply to Green River on an F-1?

The admissions page asks for non-U.S. school transcripts if available and does not mention translation (source). High School Completion applicants do need them translated into English (source).

Who can translate my transcript for credit at Green River?

The Registrar's form says a licensed translation service (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation.

Do I need a NACES evaluation for my foreign college credits?

In most cases, yes, per the transfer-credits page; it may not be needed if the transcript is in English and shows credits per course and the grading scale.

Can my foreign transcript place me into math or English?

Not once evaluated: Green River cannot use evaluated international transcripts for placement (source). Use its placement options instead.

Does my bank letter need to be in English?

Yes. Proof of financial ability must be on official letterhead, in English, and dated within 12 months of the application (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
