Sample translation: a Congolese secondary school transcript

This is what an order looks like when it is delivered, with a fictitious student. The PDF starts with the signed certification page, and the translation follows the original line for line: every abbreviation is explained, stamps, seals and signatures are noted in brackets, and the grid stays the same, so an admissions officer or a credential evaluator can match it without guessing.

What to notice

  • Two school years in the same grid as the original: every subject, grading period, exam and total, so each grade can be read against its maximum.
  • The French rating abbreviations are translated (TB becomes VG, Very good), and every abbreviation is explained in a translator's note at the foot of the same page, including one the original never defines.
  • Dates are written the US way (the original's 02/07/2015 is February 7, 2015).
  • The photo, seals and signatures are noted in brackets where they appear.

GCCC requirements in detail

Translation

High school or college transcripts must be professionally translated to English (International new applicant).

Who may translate

A professional translator (International new applicant); the student is responsible for getting it (policy).

Certification

All documents must have English translations, include a graduation date and be properly certified; only originals or certified copies, no faxes (policy).

Evaluation

The International Student Advisor evaluates the documents; a WES evaluation may also be necessary; foreign college transcripts must be evaluated by WES or another service (International new applicant).

Graduation date unclear

An official evaluation may be required (policy).

Deadlines

August 1 for fall and December 15 for spring (International new applicant); the policy recommends July 1 and November 1 (policy).

Fees

$150 application fee, $1,000 payment and $125 housing fee before the I-20 (International new applicant).

A professional translation, with the graduation date

GCCC is one of the few colleges that names the kind of translation it wants: transcripts must be professionally translated to English (International new applicant).

Its board policy adds that all documents must have English translations, must include a graduation date and must be properly certified, and that getting the translation is the student's responsibility (policy).

Make sure the graduation date on your diploma or final transcript appears in the translation; if it cannot be determined, GCCC may require an official evaluation.

When an evaluation is needed

For high school records the International Student Advisor evaluates the documents, though a WES evaluation may also be necessary.

Foreign college transcripts must always be officially evaluated by WES or another credential evaluation service, at the student's cost (International new applicant); the policy gives WES and AACRAO International Education Services as examples of course-by-course evaluations (policy).

The applicant page also links a custom SpanTran application for students who need a translation or evaluation (International new applicant).

Where GCCC's pages differ

The new applicant page lists August 1 (fall) and December 15 (spring) as deadlines (applicant page); the international students policy recommends that everything be submitted by July 1 and November 1 (policy). Aim for the earlier dates.

Need a certified translation for GCCC?

$24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages. See the price before you pay.

Documents applicants usually translate

  • High school transcripts and diploma, showing the graduation date
  • College transcripts, for the WES or other evaluation
  • Bank statements and statements of support, if not in English
  • Passport photo page (no translation needed)

What an eVerbary translation includes

  • A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
  • Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
  • A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
  • $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.

Uploading the translation to GCCC

  • Documents other than the official TOEFL score report and the course-by-course evaluation may first be sent electronically to the International Student Advisor; originals may need to be hand-carried on arrival (policy).

  • A scanned color copy of the passport is uploaded with the application; fees are paid through Flywire (International new applicant).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For GCCC that means we translate your transcripts, diploma and financial documents; a WES or other evaluation of foreign college transcripts comes from the agency.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.
