Durham Tech asks for an official English translation of any document not in English, submitted together with the original, and its translation page says translators should be certified by the American Translators Association.

Durham Tech accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary when the translator is individually certified by ATA, which eVerbary provides on request.

A translation is enough for admission only; for transfer credit Durham Tech wants a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member, which we do not provide.

Worth knowing about Durham Tech

ATA-certified

The translator Durham Tech asks for.

Admission only

A translation is enough unless you want credit.

Credit: course by course

From a NACES member, or Trustforte.

Durham Tech requirements in detail

Translation

Any document not in English needs an official English translation (Enrollment steps for students abroad seeking an F-1 visa).

Who may translate

Translators should be certified by the American Translators Association; Durham Tech points to the ATA directory and the Carolina Association of Translators and Interpreters (Translation and evaluation services).

Original and translation

Submitted together; originals can be returned after they are copied or scanned, on request (Translation and evaluation services).

Evaluation

Not needed for admission alone. For any transfer credit, a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member, or from Trustforte; this includes high school transcripts when prerequisites are needed (Translation and evaluation services).

Order of steps

International transcripts must be translated and evaluated before they are submitted; evaluation of the transcript takes up to five working days (transfer credit policy).

F-1 documents

Proof of a high school diploma or equivalent, or a college degree; passport; I-20 request form; financial evidence of $25,000 for the first year. The I-20 follows in 2 to 4 weeks once everything is received (Enrollment steps for students abroad seeking an F-1 visa).

Translation for admission, evaluation for credit

Durham Tech draws a clear line.

A translation of your transcripts is appropriate when you are seeking admission only; if you want credit for any earlier course, the transcript must be evaluated by an evaluation service, and you should ask for a course-by-course report (translation and evaluation services).

That applies to college and university transcripts and also to high school transcripts when a program has prerequisites. An evaluation does not guarantee that Durham Tech will accept the credits.

The transfer credit policy adds the order: international transcripts are translated and evaluated before they reach Durham Tech (Transfer credit award policy). Translate first, send the translation and the original to the agency, then the agency report goes to Admissions, Registration and Records.

ATA-certified translators and the agencies Durham Tech uses

The translation page says translators should be certified by the American Translators Association, lists three local translation companies, and asks for the English translation and the original-language document together (Translation and evaluation services).

The F-1 checklist itself only says "official English translation" (F-1 checklist). If you follow the stricter wording, eVerbary can assign a translator individually certified by ATA for the languages ATA certifies.

For evaluations, Durham Tech accepts NACES members and names those it regularly uses: World Education Services, recommended if you plan to transfer to UNC-Chapel Hill or another university, Foreign Academic Credential Service, Global Credential Evaluators, Josef Silny & Associates, ECE, The Evaluation Company and International Education Evaluations, the last two with discount links; outside NACES it also accepts Trustforte (Translation and evaluation services).

Each agency has its own translation rule; see translation for credential evaluation.

If you need a translator certified by ATA

Some offices accept only a translator who is personally certified by the American Translators Association (ATA). eVerbary assigns one on request, for the languages ATA certifies into English:

$34.95 per page

Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian

$44.95 per page

Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian

To order it, ask for a free quote and write in the notes that the translation is for Durham Tech, which program it is for, and that you need a translator individually certified by ATA, plus anything else the office asks for (notarization, delivery by email to the office).

We confirm the price and the translator before you pay. ATA does not certify other languages into English, so no translator anywhere holds ATA certification for them.

For those languages we provide a notarized certified translation instead, at $44.95 per page plus notarization ($34.90 per order); ask the office to confirm it accepts that, and write its answer in the quote notes.

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them.

For Durham Tech that means we translate your diploma and transcripts; the course-by-course evaluation needed for transfer credit comes from a NACES member or Trustforte.

How to order

  1. Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
  2. Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
  3. Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions

Can eVerbary provide an ATA-certified translator for Durham Tech?

Yes, on request: ask for a free quote and say the translation is for Durham Tech and must be by an ATA-certified translator. ATA certifies translation into English from Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Ukrainian ($34.95 per page) and from Japanese, Korean, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Croatian, Danish and Persian ($44.95 per page), and no other languages.

Do I need an evaluation to be admitted?

No. Durham Tech says a translation is appropriate when you are seeking admission only; the evaluation is for transfer credit (Translation and evaluation services).

Which evaluation agency should I use?

Any NACES member, or Trustforte. Durham Tech recommends World Education Services if you plan to transfer to UNC-Chapel Hill or another university (Translation and evaluation services).

Do I send the original too?

Yes. The translation and the original-language document go together; Durham Tech returns originals on request after copying them (Translation and evaluation services).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
