The Catholic University of America: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
Catholic University asks for transcripts in the official language of the issuing school and, when that language is not English, accompanied by a certified English translation; its pages do not limit who makes the translation. The Catholic University of America accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Undergraduate records must also be evaluated (the website recommends SpanTran), which we do not do, while the central graduate office evaluates transcripts itself.

Catholic University requirements at a glance
| What Catholic University asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | Required when the school's official language is not English: a "certified English translation" on the website, a "certified, translated copy" in the 2026-27 catalog (website, catalog). |
| Who may translate | Not stated. Neither the website nor the catalog names a translator type (Academic documentation (for undergraduates)). |
| Evaluation (undergraduate) | Transcripts must be translated and evaluated before review; SpanTran is the recommended service. The catalog names WES or AACRAO and applies the rule even to records already in English (website, catalog). |
| Evaluation (graduate) | Done by the University for the central graduate application (Graduate international admission). The social work school asks MSW applicants for an independent evaluation (NCSSS). |
| Official records | Sent by your school directly to Catholic University, with an original seal or stamp; photocopies or faxes that are not certified are refused (Academic documentation (for undergraduates)). |
| Where to send | Undergraduates email documents to cua-international@cua.edu; graduate documents go from the institution to Enrollment Operations or em-operations@cua.edu (undergraduate, graduate). |
| Deadlines | Undergraduate fall: November 1 (Early Action, Early Decision I) and February 1 (Regular Decision, Early Decision II). Graduate: November 1 for spring, July 1 for fall, rolling (undergraduate, graduate). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. Catholic University's academic documentation page asks for a "certified English translation" and does not say who must make it (academic documentation); the catalog asks for a "certified, translated copy" (catalog). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is that kind of translation. Policy checked on October 13, 2026. |

Records in the original language, translation alongside
Catholic University wants transcripts written in the official language of the school that issued them, and a certified English translation added when that language is not English (Academic documentation (for undergraduates)). The translation does not replace the record: your secondary school or college sends the official transcript with its original seal or stamp, and the English version travels with it. The undergraduate checklist puts it in three words, a secondary school report "with transcripts (translated)" (Undergraduate international admission).
If the institution you attended cannot reissue an official transcript, Catholic University lets you submit a copy of the original you hold, provided a notary certifies it as an accurate copy (Academic documentation (for undergraduates)). That notarization is of your copy of the original, done where you live; it is separate from the translation. Notarization of the translation itself can be added at checkout for $34.90 per order if you want it, but the published rule asks only for a certified translation.
Undergraduate evaluation: SpanTran, WES or AACRAO
For undergraduates the translation is not the last step: the documentation page says all transcripts must be translated into English and evaluated before they are reviewed, and recommends SpanTran, which runs a custom Catholic University application that picks the right evaluation at a discounted rate (Academic documentation (for undergraduates)). The 2026-27 undergraduate catalog describes the same step differently: transcripts from outside the United States must be certified by a recognized evaluator such as WES or AACRAO, even when they are already in English (Undergraduate Announcements 2026-27: international student admission).
Evaluators set their own translation rules, so check the one you choose before you order. Ours is a certified, complete translation of the transcript and diploma, with the grades exactly as issued; the evaluation and the conversion to a U.S. equivalent come from the evaluator.
Graduate: the University evaluates, NCSSS asks for more
The central graduate international page asks for official transcripts from previous colleges, accepts unofficial ones for review, and says the University itself evaluates transcripts and credentials (Graduate international admission). Requirements vary by program, so the department may add documents.
The National Catholic School of Social Service is one such program. For the MSW it wants official transcripts with an attached English translation, received as early as possible so course content and credit can be assessed, and it requires an independent evaluation of foreign credentials (National Catholic School of Social Service: international students).
Where Catholic University's pages differ
Three pages describe the evaluation three ways: the documentation page recommends SpanTran, the catalog names WES or AACRAO, and the graduate page says the University evaluates. The undergraduate page also lists "apply online by Jan. 15" in its checklist while its deadlines are November 1 and February 1. We have not resolved these differences for you; ask cua-international@cua.edu which applies to your file.
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school transcripts and the diploma or proof of graduation
- College or university transcripts and degree certificates, for transfer and graduate applicants
- A notary-certified copy of your original transcript, when your school cannot reissue one
- Graduate transcripts, for doctoral applicants and the MSW at the social work school
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to Catholic University
Undergraduate: apply through the Common Application and email your documents to cua-international@cua.edu; official transcripts, with the translation, come from your school (Undergraduate international admission, Academic documentation (for undergraduates)).
Graduate: the institution sends official documents to Enrollment Operations, 620 Michigan Ave NE, or emails them (or an e-transcript link) to em-operations@cua.edu; unofficial copies can be uploaded for review (Graduate international admission).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Catholic University that means we translate your records; the undergraduate evaluation comes from SpanTran or another evaluator, and the official transcript comes from your school.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Who can translate my transcripts for Catholic University?
The University asks for a certified English translation and does not name a translator type (Academic documentation (for undergraduates)). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary is accepted under that wording.
Do I send only the translation?
No. The transcript stays in the school's own language, with its seal or stamp, and the certified English translation accompanies it (Academic documentation (for undergraduates)).
Which evaluation service should I use as an undergraduate?
The website recommends SpanTran through a Catholic University application; the catalog mentions WES or AACRAO (website, catalog).
My school cannot reissue my transcript. What can I do?
Submit a copy of the original, certified by a notary as an accurate copy (Academic documentation (for undergraduates)).
Do graduate applicants need an evaluation?
Not for the central graduate application, where the University evaluates transcripts (Graduate international admission). The MSW at the National Catholic School of Social Service requires an independent evaluation (National Catholic School of Social Service: international students).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
